We are in a competitive situation with FOCUS on VAX versus FOCUS on Hitachi Data Systems. The HDS people are telling the customer that I/O performance of FOCUS on VAX is poor compared to performance on 'equivalent' HDS system. The customer is concerned. (HDS is the encumbent) Before we follow up with IBI, does anyone here have any insights into the truth or otherwise of this broad generalisation. Peter

Sounds like a very broad statement ...! Probably isn't based on any real background informations. What is exactly an HDS system (Unix, TSO or MVS clone, ... ) ?

Hitachi Data Systems is the company that took over NAS. They sell IBM plug compatible mainframes. We are competing with a IBM Group 29 or 30 Plug Compatible Mainframe running the VM operating system. Peter

Similar broad statement regarding VAX FOCUS versus IBM FOCUS have been made in the past. The truth is that FOCUS I/O subsystem has been re-written in VAX-FOCUS (since the first versions) to take advantages as much as possible of the feature inherent to a particular plateform. Therefore if the argument is FOCUS was initially written on IBM, therefore its I/O subsystem is more performant on this plateform, well ... that ain't true... |
