511.0. "EDA Overview." by EVTDD1::CARRIERE (Jean-Claude Carriere) Tue May 05 1992 09:26
Without getting into a great length of details, EDA (Entreprise
Data Architecture) is IBI's strategy & architecture for remote
database access and (in some future) distributed data processing.
Basically it allows (like RDA) transparent access to a remote
database on a remote system. It contains
a) A FOCUS server running on the server system able to access
local databases (either FOCUS or foreign databases through the
various interfaces)
a) A FOCUS client running on a client system.
E.g. it allows for example a VAX User to interrogate a DB2 database
on IBM Mainframe transparently as if it was a local RdB Database.
Or vice versa. A User on system A has access to any databases that
FOCUS can read on system B.
EDA request language is SQL and EDA was also designed to include
an API for 3GL client application.
EDA is part of an agreement between IBM and IBI, however it does
interest more than just the IBM world. With all usual restrictions
(on availability) here are configurations I have seen/tested :
Server : IBM & VAX
Client : IBM & VAX & PC & MAC
