Anyone out there willing to comment on this.... The local Unilever has been a Focus user on VMS/Rdb environment and now they are moving to RISC/Ultrix environment. The would like to continue using Focus and of course they'd like to have access to their old Rdb data. Since Focnet is not available on RISC/ultrix we have suggested the following configuration: Ultrix-box VMS-box Focus Focus Ultrix/SQL Ultrix/SQL remote access to rdb Ultrix/SQL Net Rdb DECnet DECnet The general idea is to use Focus and Ingres on Ultrix and use remote rdb databases as if they were remote Ingres databases. I have managed to configure the system so, that i can access the remote Rdb databases from Ultrix/SQL environment with isql (interactive sql), but when i try to use focus (for example tabletalk) the connection fails with an error message saying that cursor operations have failed. The logfiles on VMS show that the query have reached the Rdb - database, everything seems to be OK. The local Information-Builder office claims that the configuration should work they have checked the .mas .focsql definitions and they are OK. Any hints ? I'm using Ultrix 4.2 Ultrix/SQL 2.0 VMS 5.5 Rdb 4.0 Remote Access to Rdb 1.0 cheers, Ilkka

507.1 | Nice Configuration !!!! | PRSIS7::CARRIERE | Jean-Claude Carriere | Tue Apr 14 1992 12:25 | 23 |
I haven't try this configuration, nor do I have much experience with Ultrix/FOCUS, however here are couple of tips, hope it might be helpful : 1: Did you try to FILEDEF the FSTRACE in order to trace all cursors operations, and see especially the offending return code and SQL operation (Probably SQL Connect) 2: I know (that on VMS) there are two settings in Ingres for error messages processing when accessing foreign (RdB) databases : - either to return the underlying database error code. - or return a generic INGRES/SQL error code (This mode should be preferred since for FOCUS things should look like it's trying to access to Ingres and has no idea that RdB is underneath) 3: Finally I suggest to check how the username/password is being passed to Ingres (and then RdB). Cheers Jean-Claude.
507.2 | New Focus release | EEMELI::RAISKINEN | Thu Apr 23 1992 03:23 | 11
To be continued... The local focus representative told me the configuration described in .0 is a no go with the current Focus version. However, there is going to be a new release (version, patch,..??) soon where .0 should work. Could anyone verify that, is it a patch or a new version. cheers, Ilkka |
