Hi, I am dealing with a customer who is developing and running FOCUS applications. They currently have a Microvax 3800. I was down there yesterday looking at the performance of the system. To get a better feel for the system workload I started asking the 'system manager' type person about the FOCUS applications. He commented it was very slow to activate the FOCUS applications. They have a main menu written in FOCUS which chains to other FOCUS modules which return control to the menu module when the processing is complete. In one example he showed me it took about 39 seconds to load in a 4000 (approx.) line module. Is this typical or is there something wrong somewhere. That gives an effective compilation rate of 100 lines per second. I believe the module that was chained to was not compiled. As I understand it, the FOCUS applications cannot actually be compiled to machine code, but can be compiled to an intermediate p-code style format. Any input on typical FOCUS performance, gotchas etc. would be helpful. thanks Mike p.s. I noticed someone asked a while back about the performance of FOCUS on 3000/6000 class machines. There was no response. Does it use the CHAR operators heavily and is thus impacted by the emulated instructions on certain classes of VAX systems ?

Ok, I'll take a different tack. Can any internal FOCUS developers point me to a system manager of an internal VAX running FOCUS applications that I could contact and get some opinions or figures on the resource usage of the FOCUS applications ? thanks Mike |
