477.0. "FOCUS NAS/CLIENT-SERVER SUPPORT?" by PARVAX::JACKEWICZ () Fri Nov 01 1991 15:39
Recent FOCUS advertisements in the Digital trade papers stress
that FOCUS can "do it all" across all NAS platforms and has a
client-server architecture. Can anyone out there provide feedback
as to whether this is true and deliverable today or just marketting
hype? My specific needs are as follows:
1.) Client/server architecture
2.) Support for RdB on the server side
3.) Support for DOS/MS-windows, Macintosh,
VMS/Motif and remote VMS VTXXX client interfaces.
4.) Portability of applications development
I have a client site with 250+ Mac's, 100+ MS-DOS PC's, and a
variety of VAX and VAXstation systems. This site has a terrible
problem with desktop access to data, and an appropriate solution
would be to use the available VAX systems as data base servers and
develop client applications to access the data from the PC's/Mac's.
Doe FOCUS have the ability to fulfill this need (the only other
thing which seems to fit the bill is ORACLE, and this customer
has had bad experiences with it at other locations).
Any help regarding FOCUS fitting this requirement or pointers to
other products which might work will be appreciated.
