462.0. "Problem with HOLD in FOCUS report fex" by MILPND::LEBOW () Mon Sep 30 1991 17:16

    Could anyone help me with a problem with FOCUS version 6.1?
    I have a fex that creates a hold file.  Since we upgraded to 6.1
    the hold statement creates only the HOLD.MAS but not the HOLD.FTM.
    There is no HOLD.FTM created in any subdirectory in the account.
    This problem does not occur in all accounts. 
    Does anyone have any idea what this could be?  Thanks,

	Judy, Are there any clues as to whether there actually ARE any data selected? Is there a log available ? I ask because the only thing I can think of, without more info', is that there is some problem with the .fex which FOCUS v5.n didn't object to, whilst v6 does, hence producing no HOLD.ftm Regards, Paul K

	Do you have anything else in the directory that contains the HOLD.MAS file that is called HOLD.anything. One thing that we found with V6.1 is that the hold files will write over anything that has the same filename in the account, regardless of the extension. May be another possibility if there is a file created. Sharon

	I know this may seem too obvious a question, but...are you sure there is at least one record which qualifies for the conditions imposed by your TABLE request. The only time I've EVER seen HOLD.FTM not created is when there are 0 records selected for a given request.

	Hi again, RE: .3 question about my .2 reply Sorry, I was a bit clouded on the problem we had. Just looked back and that problem exists only with the creation of FORMAT DOC hold files when a .FTM file already exists with the same basic filename. Basically, If you create a hold file first called TEST.FTM and then create a FORMAT DOC hold file using ... ON TABLE HOLD AS TEST FORMAT DOC It will write the FORMAT DOC output into the existing TEST.FTM file. So, if you need to save the TEST.FTM file for other processing you have to be sure and not name your reports in DOC format the same name. This is probably not the problem here however. Don't know if the other FORMAT's of HOLD files do the same thing, but would suspect so. Sharon

	RE .5 I have had the same problem with V6.1. I created an .FTM with HOLD AS TEST FORMAT BINARY while I had done a SET HOLDDEFAULT=ALPHA. Then I created a report from TEST.FTM with HOLD AS TEST FORMAT DOC and FOCUS put the report in TEST.FTM and wiped out the previous .FTM. WATCH OUT ! I got burned. Production jobs that have been running 'forever' may not run anymore! Beware of anything new! Greg

	I've some more testing and this does NOT happen in all cases, of course. I haven't narrowed down all the circumstances but I will reply with more info when I can spend some time on this. Greg

	Further testing indicate the conidition described in .5. I do a TABLE against a file and then HOLD the report as a .DOC with the same name. It use to work, but... Greg
