I am going to be doing some Rdb Design Consulting the customer is going to be using focus as a 4GL tool . The customer wants to know if it will work on a cluster. Is there any gotcha's that I should be aware of. Also suppose the customer was considering that long term perhaps if the prototype is successful. Would FOCUS/RDB support 200 users in a shop floor control situation. If so, what kind of HARDWARE would this entail. looking for heuristics here gut feels, not well it depends on the application. Application will never be defined it will be an evolving prototype continuous improvement (MIS JIT):^). What Im looking for is making sure the evolution starts with the right type of fish. Or when it starts to behave like a WHALE then you need to start looking at these type of tools if you want it so swim . Thanks the_tavano_object

Some thoughts - I guess it depends on what you are trying to do - if you are just using FOCUS to access the database for read only purposes, you should have no problem and will only be limited to the limits of what Rdb imposes on your system. If you are going to be using FOCUS to maintain/update your database, you have a different scenario - FOCUS READ/WRITE interface is more $$$ for the product to be installed on your cluster. As long as you spend the time to make your Rdb database as good as it can be and optimal for both update and access - then your FOCUS access will be only as good as the database. I've worked on FOCUS read only interface to an Rdb database from database size of 2-3 Gigabytes to over 15 million blocks worth of data! One of the tables has over 12 million records in it and because I tuned the table to maximize user access of it, a regular inquire against it that used to take 2 hours on RMS files now takes less than 5 minutes on the Rdb database. Any questions, feel free to call or send mail Lisa Cioni |
