After spending alot of time playing/wrestling with logicals, I
found a way to access an RdB with a filename greater than 8 characters
with the help of Kate from the hotline.  Anyhow, to eliviate any 
further wrestling here is what worked;

DEFINE /NOLOG ORDEREF BIG$DISK:[SWFMIC]MULTI_ORDERS.RDB

the important bit being the /NOLOG instead of a concealed logical and

FILEDEF ORDERS DISK ORDEREF:

and  naming the files ORDERS.MAS & ORDERS.ACX not forgetting to leave
line 1 in the .mas to be FILE="ORDERS"
