374.0. "Client/server for FOCUS?" by CRBOSS::LEMONS (And we thank you for your support.) Tue Oct 23 1990 09:59

Does FOCUS have a client/server, or some other distributed mechanism,
allowing a user on one node to execute FOCUS residing on another node?

    Thanks!

From a node which does not have FOCUS software but does have for
example your RDB data, you can submit a remote job to a node which
has FOCUS software. This job could manipulate your data.

This gets the job done now. I don't know what else IBI is offering
    for its client/server model.
374.2Another way - Not true "Client-server" , but it works.... CUCKOO::OTTENMiddle-Management Buck-passer.Thu Oct 25 1990 13:3312
Or Investigate MRE.. Version 1.3 or 2.0.

For end-users, it allows reports to be run either on the local node
(In the case of the data being on the local node),
or on a remote node. It transfers the procedure and results
accross decnet using FTSV and STC.

Please don't hesitate to Mail/Call me for furthur information.

(P.S. If it's an External customer who's asking, MRE is an ASSET)

I looked into the MRE notes file, and learned a bit (a tad, really) about
MRE. We don't use ALL-IN-1 here. Also, I want my users and their data to
stay where they are, on the 'home' system. I want the FOCUS software to run
on a different system.

Given this, will MRE help?

Thanks!

I Don't think that FOCUS is able to use the RDB Server.. - But I may be wrong..

Given what you want to do, MRE Won't help.. MRE can ONLY be used from
ALL-IN-1 (It's written in ALL-IN-1)

The only thing I can suggest is using DFS to make the
local disks accessable from the remote system, and using
something like decscheduler to transfer the batch jobs
accross the network.

Sorry.. I can't help.. Unless you're willing to fund us to totally
rewrite MRE.. :-) ????
