348.0. "Decwindows implementation & Ultrix?" by MAIL::SHAHNAM (Mehran Shahnam @STO) Wed Jun 13 1990 17:56

    Hi folks,
I've got a customer running FOCUS on 5 different boxes and wants to
be able to run it only on one and access it remotely from other systems
without actually logging in (she said using remote procedure calls ??).
She mentioned that since IBI has complied with our NAS arch. she should be
able to do that. I was reading about FOCUS and noticed that it supports
DECwindows. Does this mean full DW integration or running it from within
a terminal emulation window? If it's full integration then she can display
FOCUS on a workstation or VT 1000. Is there any other of doing this? If
that doesn't have a windowing terminal, what then? (BTW I'm not talking
about network access to database, rather running the application remotely).

Also another customer of mine wants to know if he can using FOCUS
access INGRESS on RISC/ULTRIX. Will FOCUS work over the net fro a
VMS/ULTRIX to access INGRES on RISC/ULTRIX?

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Mehran,

I am curious to know where you read about the FOCUS DECWINDOWS
interface. I know they have plans to implement it but have not seen any
literature on it. As for now you can run FOCUS on the one machine and
create terminal windows on each of the 5 machines.

    KC,
I got the info out of a glossy in our resource center labled "FOCUS
    for VAX", it reads:
    "....
FOCUS integrateswith Digital's powerful DECwindows product, providing
    superb user interface...."

That to me doesn't sound like it is futures, or does it?

Going back to your answer, what do you mean by opening terminal
windows? Are you talking about seting host to that machine and running
the application or there is another way? Please explain.

I also had another question regarding interoperability between FOCUS on
VAX & RISC, and INGRES on RISC. Any takers? Pleaaaaaaaase.
    Customer is waiting.

    I appreciate all your helps.

I'm not sure what your customer is trying to accomplish but I
can tell you a couple of things we do with FOCUS.

From a host node (running FOCUS) we access data on remote nodes
       in the network.

From remote nodes (not running FOCUS) we run remote jobs on the
host (running FOCUS) which access data on the remote nodes.

    As far as INGRES/RISC, I know IBI has an ULTRIX/RISC version;
I'm not sure if they have an INGRES/RISC interface yet. Check with
    Information Builders NY.
