306.0. "performance figures ?" by IJSAPL::IJBEN (Jan IJben, Utrecht Holland) Wed Jan 31 1990 07:57

	Hello,

Can anybody give me some information (or pointer to) performance
figures for Focus in combination with Rdb.
Can I use Focus in a front-end situation:
	- Rdb on a cluster
	- Focus on a station or microVAX ?

(The customer involved wants to have Focus because users allready
use it on their IBM. My goal is to promote Rdb, once it is
inside it will open the way for our tools: Rally, DECdesision etc.)

306.1How fast do they want it?ESSB::BROCKLEBANKFri Feb 02 1990 09:3220
    Hi Jan,
We've been using FOCUS as a reporting tool within MRE against RdB
for the past year. I'v seen no published figures on performance
and heard alot of talk about it.

We have a larhe RdB here (500,000 blks) and FOCUS used to be slow in
accessing it. By slow I mean a report could take 5 hours to complete.
By optomising the RdB, putting in efficient indexes and changing the
Focus master files the performance dramatically improved. The sme
report now takes 30 minutes. The avarage time for reports against
this large RdB is approx 20 mins. A specific request to locate a
particular record using an index finishes in seconds.

Similar reports could be written in datatrieve to run faster, but
its impossible to generalise on comparisons. As far as I can see,
if you get slow response times using Focus, its not because of the
tool, but rather the indexes on the RdB and how the Focus master
    files are setup.

    re .1
Thanks for your answer, the example you referred to looks good,
	but ...

may I conclude from the above that if you tune Rdb and Focus you
will have a "reasonable" response ?
If so, how do I convince my customer he can use Focus, there must
be some figures or references ?!

Yes, you get a reasonable response. Unfortunately, I don't know
where you will get any actual figures. If you find out, can you
post your response in this note.

    Regards,
    Dave
