256.0. "Ranking top 10 customers" by BROOKE::LAZARUSD (Dave Laz) Mon Aug 21 1989 23:34

This may not entirely fit the scope of this conference, but since
I am trying to solve this problem in IBI-FOCUS,I will post it here.

We're trying to do a top 10 ranking of customer sales. The problem
is that several customers(i.e. AT&T) go many names and numbers,so
it is difficult to concatenate their numbers. I tried using ABSOLUTE
DUNS number ,bu that isn't entirely dependable either.

This question would be better posted in an AIC conference. Is there
    such an animal?

Here is the answer given from the USADSS notes conference:

There is an AIC conference, but I haven't seen any activity in
there for a long long time.

As to your question, it is a well known problem in most of the
areas I think. Here in SCA, we have a file called SAMS. This is the
same file as is distributed with SOLAR, only a different copy. We
utilize the maintenance screens (which are also in SOLAR in the SOL
options), to maintain the file. In that file you can establish your
own new duns numbers and assign as many customer numbers to that duns
number as you wish. We call the duns numbers we create 'DUMMY DUNS
NUMBERS' and they all start with a 'D'. For example 'D00000001' is one
of the dummy duns numbers we created to group the University of Texas
systems differently from the standard Ultimate Duns number. I think
Southern Area does something similar, but they can answer for
    themselves.

By the way ULTIMATE DUNS may be better to use than ABSOLUTE DUNS.

Also, the official answer is that the BSRF is being continually
improved to correct/adjust DUNS numbers to suit Digital better. Any
errors should be reported to the BSRF maintainers. But even if the
BSRF were perfect, local management may want to view some accounts in a
different rollup from D&B. That's why the 'reduns' approach of
assigning dummy duns numbers is still required.
