218.0. "(FOC227) EXEC PROCEDURE NOT FOUND" by MYALLA::TILBURY (Linden Tilbury - SWS Canberra) Thu May 25 1989 21:34

I'm doing a demo of the AMIS system that was shown at DECworld '88.
Everything's working except the interface to FOCUS.

The command FOCUS/NOBAN/PROFILE=AMIS$DATA:PROFILE.FEX produces the
following error:

(FOC227) EXEC PROCEDURE NOT FOUND OR NOT ACCESSIBLE :
    CAO$OA:[ALLIN1.SITE_ENGLISH.AMIS.DATA]PROFILE.FEX

I'm sure this is something perfectly simple. It's working perfectly on
another machine here.

218.1AMIS - Translating logicalsGVA01::MAISLISCHFri May 26 1989 05:3624
We didn't know AMIS had travelled all the way to Canberra. How did
    you obtain the demo kit?

Your problem probably comes from the fact that when FOCUS translates
a logical such as AMIS$DATA, it only reads a certain number of
characters for the full directory specification and truncates the
rest. I believe the number is 28, while you use 38 characters. The
solution is to move the application into a higher-level
directory or one with a shorter name, e.g. [ALLIN1.AMIS].

To verify that the translation has been done correctly, invoke FOCUS
through $FOCUS/PROFILE=AMIS$DATA:PROFILE. When you get the FOCUS
prompt, type >> ? FILEDEF and see how the logicals translate.

Could you give us some information/feedback on how AMIS has been
perceived in Australia. Have you done several demos? What was the
    reaction?

For your information, we are shortly releasing a much improved version
of AMIS which no longer uses FOCUS.

218.2Problem solved. Keep tuned for the feedback...MYALLA::TILBURYLinden Tilbury - SWS CanberraThu Jun 01 1989 21:4015
You were perfectly right Alan. After moving it up a directory everything
worked beautifully. Thanks for the help.

As far as information/feedback goes, I'll have to get back to you.
Personally, I think it's GREAT, but we haven't put it in front of a
customer yet. There are so many here who are interested though, so
I should be a wealth of information in a month or so (I'm going on
leave for 3 weeks).

How soon before the FOCUS-less version (and what's taking its place)?
I was talking to one of the customer execs yesterday who said he knew
FOCUS on "the other" machine and liked it, so was pleased we were using it!

I ran into this error too. This note probably saved me a day of
    "searching for the bug".

This one is tricky because the error message
will contain the translated logical and will not be truncated.
The actual logical translation used as a pointer *will* be truncated!

    FOCUS can be fun.

I must admit that I am the one who is responsible for trying to
setup AMIS demonstrations in Australia. When I was working with
you and the others in the Executive Office in DECworld, I took AMIS
a little for granted. It was only after talking about the concept
to a few customers back in Australia, that I thought it would be
worthwhile to setup a demonstration here. I am still surprised how
well people react to the idea. We hope to start showing it off in
the next month. Let's hope the demonstrations are successful as
    our initial discussions.
