We have a big client who currently has database packages from several vendors. Some of these are Oracle, FOCUS, Ingres etc. We are wondering if we can store all the data definitions in CDD-PLUS on a central machine and have the 3rd party software access these central definitions. I have tried to look around for some information and I have found the following: I. From PRODSPEC.MEM CHAPTER 4: | 1. NAD Function Box - The NAD function box provides a call | interface to all the dictionary capabilities. It is targeted | to make integration between the dictionary and OEM products | easy. II. From Sales Update/Special Issue dated July 12, 1988: An open architecture enables VAX CDD/PLUS to become a universal repository, interfacing with software products from Digital and from other application and database vendors. The above two items indicate that it can be done. I have the following questions: - How do we do it ? - Has someone done it successfully ? - How easy or complicated is it ? - Is there any documentation (online or otherwise) that describes the technics in detail ? These some of the questions to kick off the discussion. I will really appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks in advance. chandan P.S. I have posted this note in the CDD/Plus Notes conference (Note 432). I am also going to post it in the INGRES notes conference. I am posting it here to learn about experiences that some of you might have had in using CDD/Plus with FOCUS.

169.1 | No support for CDD/Plus for FOCUS | NCCODE::KERNS | Fast - maybe, Good - maybe, Cheap - never! | Wed Jan 18 1989 22:16 | 9 |
I talked to IBI VAX Manager and they do not have a date for support of CDD/PLUS. We are using FOCUS with RDB, and I do not have anything good to say about the RDB interface with FOCUS. As for the CDD/Plus interface, there is a manual for the calls to CDD/Plus. I don't have the order number, but it is available, and they have some examples written in PASCAL and FORTRAN in the manual. Steve | |||||

I spoke with IBI and they said they are waiting for the documentation on CDD (+) callable interface to be released. They claim this manual is not yet avaiable to the general public. They are planning to provide a facility which will read the CDD defination and create a .MAS file based on the information it can get from the CDD. They are not planning anything in the other direction. Which is sort of what I am looking for. Thanks for warning me about the FOCUS interface to RDB and thanks for taking the time to respond. |
