120.0. "IBI_FOCUS vs. DATATRIEVE" by FDCV30::BURDELL () Mon Aug 29 1988 09:52

I have been given the task in my group to determine if
IBI FOCUS would be a better product to use than DATATRIEVE which
is the tool we currently use. We have several Datatrieve
procedures and databases. We use Datatrieve for extracting files,
merging files into databases, single inquiries and writing
reports. We use COBOL and FMS in conjunction with DTR.
	I would need to know:

	  1) On large files, (approx. 200,000 blocks) would
Focus be quicker than Datatrieve for single inquiries?

          2) How long would it take and easy would be to convert
the DTR programs and databases into FOCUS? We run aprox.
100 procedures during a closing week. This would
be a one person job, learning the language and rewriting
             the procedures.

	  3) In general, the pros and cons of both languages.

My problem has been, if I find someone who knows about
FOCUS, they don't know DATATRIEVE. Thus, I can't get the
	comparison.

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

    In a word, YES.

Most any product matched against DTR wins. Comparing FOCUS to DTR is
like comparing a Porche to a Chevette. Where FOCUS will really clean
up is in its joins versus DTR's crosses. God knows what DTR does in a
cross but it must use an Korean War algorythm in its linkage.
