97.0. "Focus processing speed" by HOCUS::RUDOLPH () Wed Jul 20 1988 17:42

    Focus processing speed....

    Haven't read anything previously listed that has to do with my
    situation. I have a customer in NYC who is using FOCUS for a case
    tracking application. The application resides on a MVII BA123 with
    6mb of memory and a RD53. Sixty small case files are loaded, however,
    with one user the system is very slow, especially moving from one
    logical portion to another. Wishing to avoid any finger pointing
    battles, I'm trying to determine if any one has FOCUS running a
    similar application on this type of MVII. Appreciate any help.

    Regards,

    Before I worked at DEC, I ran an MVII with 11mb mem and a RD53
    with FOCUS applications and 8 users. The response time overall
    was very acceptable. However there are some critical factors
    which must be addresed. they are system configuration and
    FOCUS database design.
       Make sure FOCUS is an installed image
       Make sure there are enough global pages of memory allocated to
         fit all the installed images on the system.
       Make sure the FOCUS files are designed efficiently. Hierarchical
         structures if organized properly are nice.

    Are you saying that 60 small Case transaction files are loaded into
    1 FOCUS  file?

    If its a real mess have them call in an IBI consultant.

97.2MVII Disk drives are the culpretPLANIT::RYANThu Aug 04 1988 20:055
    I'm running an application on a MVII and I'm finding that memory is not
    the issue; it's the slower disk drives. I'm not sure what the solution
    is but for now I'm experimenting with RAM disk for those applications
    that are small enough to fit in memory. I'll report later on how
    successful this technique is.
