92.0. "Limit on READing only??" by MEMV02::SHELTRY (Wayne - MEM Finance IS - Acton) Wed Jul 13 1988 16:41

    Has anyone experienced a problem with a limit on the number of people
    who can READ from a FOCUS database?? As I understand it (I just
    spoke to a woman on the phone about this) an application is running
    (without SU also) and there are up to 10 people reading the same
    file. Seven people seem to be okay, but with 10 people on, a few
    of them get bumped out of FOCUS. I suggested that she have 5 people
    sign on and start reading the file, and then add on 1 user at a
    time over a few minutes to see at what point someone gets bumped
    off.

    I've generally worked with people accessing FOCUS under SU so I've
    not encountered this problem. Would like to hear what other people
    have for experience.

    I have seen applications , also not running SU, with more
    than 10 concurrent users.

    Questions:

    	1) Are the users in the same default directory?
    	2) Has a USE statement been given for the files?
    	3) Any messages for the users kicked out (other than the
    	  standard  "%NONAME-W-NOMSG Message number 000000")

    Contention problems can occur if:

        1) SU and non SU applications are accessing the database
    	    simultaneously;
        2)  The same Username tries to access SU in simultaneous sessions;
    	3) As per 92.1, USE statements can cause disturbances.

92.3Problem SolvedAKOV68::THOMSEN_MGTFri Jul 15 1988 11:5410

    We have solved the problem. The problem was caused have several
    users using the same directory. It seems that all users in the
    same directory will share work files. This caused focus to become
    confussed. Once we set up seperate directories for each user the
    problem was solved.

    Thanks for the help

92.4IBI has a solution with release 5.2NRMLZE::ESTESTue Jul 19 1988 15:5113
    Release 5.2 has a fix for this as well.
    If you have multiple users sharing a account
    invoke FOCUS with the switch /SUBDIR with the parameter
    =KEEP to keep the subdirectories
    or
    =DELETE to delete the subdirectories
    when exiting.

    It appears to make a unique subdirectory for each user and place
    all scratch files there.
