Subject: Applications Performance and Configuration Guide
                   4th Edition

The Application Systems Engineering Performance Group is
pleased to announce the availability of the ASE Performance
          and Configuration Guide (4th edition).

This guide is produced by the Application Systems Engineering
Performance Group, formerly known as the Information Systems
and Applications Performance Group, or ISAPG.

This fourth edition has undergone a title change to reflect
the group name change. All chapters have been updated,
therefore a complete new version was produced. A new chapter
discussing TeamLinks has also been added.

          The guide describes:

o How to measure an application's performance
o How to implement a capacity plan
o How to position these products on the various platforms
o How to size a system to meet specific customer needs
o How to configure the system for optimal performance
o How Digital evaluates the performance of various applications

It also includes the results from the tested applications.

Sales and sales support personnel can use the information
in this guide to help their customers plan, configure, and
maintain application systems that meet the customers'
          performance requirements.

o Chapter 1 tells how this book can help you provide better
             service to customers.

o Chapter 2 gives definitions of the terms, activities,
and concepts that you are likely to encounter when dealing
             with performance-related issues.

o Capacity and performance management is an ongoing process
that spans all of the work that the system performs on
the user's behalf. A generic, comprehensive capacity
planning methodology is presented in Chapter 3 .

o The tools most commonly used in performance and capacity
management are described in Chapter 4 .

o ALL-IN-1 Integrated Office Systems are described
             in Chapter 5 .

o ALL-IN-1 DESKtops and the MAILbus Postmaster are
             discussed in Chapter 6 .

o Electronic mail systems are discussed in Chapter 7 . Cov-
ered here are the ALL-IN-1 user agents, DEC MAILworks
for CCT/DOS/Windows, and Message Router's Transport
             Service products.

o Chapter 8 focuses on DECwrite, X-Terminals and the CDA
             services.

o Chapter 9 discusses the Dun and Bradstreet Millennium
Accounts Payable and General Ledger applications.

o Chapter 10 discusses batch applications for Dun and Brad-
street, Ross Systems General Ledger, and Cyborg Systems
Corporate Payroll. It also provides guidelines for tun-
             ing large commercial batch applications.

o Chapter 11 discusses Lotus Development Corporation's Lotus
1-2-3 product and Borland's dBASE IV product.

             Data Interchange product DEC/EDI.

o Chapter 13 provides information on TeamLinks V1.0.

o Appendix A outlines a methodology for sizing a system
for a workload made up of a mix of the applications pre-
sented in this guide. It also references an on-line ver-
sion of the sizing system available on VTX/BOSS as part
of the Solution Design Guide (SDG).

Subject: Application Performance and Configuration Guide V4.02

The Application System Engineering Performance Group is pleased to announce the
availability of version 4.02 of the Application Performance and Configuration
Guide.

The guide describes how to measure an application system's performance, how to
implement a capacity plan, how to position these applications on the various
Digital platforms, how to size a system to meet specific customer needs, and
how to configure the system for optimal performance.

Sales and sales support personnel can use the information in this guide to help
their customers plan, configure, and maintain a broad range of applications
that meet the customers' performance requirements.

Sections of the guide will be revised and expanded on a regular basis as new
information becomes available. Revisions will be announced in the Performance
Group Notes file (MRKTNG::ASEPG) as well as through electronic mail.

The guide is now available through the Digital Library Catalogue. Also,
the Guide is available in Postscript form from MRKTNG::USERG:[ASEPG]ASEPC.PS,
(14,000 blocks) and in Bookreader form from
MRKTNG::USERG:[ASEPG]ASEPC.DECW$BOOK. Individual chapters are available from
MRKTNG::USERG:[ASEPG.GUIDE]ISA_xxx.PS (as noted below).

- Chapter 1 tells how this book can help you provide better service to
customers (ISA_INTR.PS).

- Chapter 2 establishes a framework for the information that follows, by giving
definitions of the terms, activities, and concepts that you are likely to
encounter when dealing with performance-related issues (ISA_PERF.PS).

SyncSort available for Digital's Alpha ... Date: 29-Mar-1995

Page 1 of 1 SyncSort available for Digital's Alpha systems

SyncSort, Inc. and Digital have announced the availability of
SyncSort, Syncsort's high performance sort utility, running on Digital's
   Alpha computer systems.
SyncSort recently showed record-setting performance in benchmark
tests by Digital on an AlphaServer 2100 system with 25Gb of striped
disk space, completing gigabyte sorts in less than 15 minutes and
100Mb sorts in less than a minute.
"Two years ago, sorting a gigabyte of data on any system other
than a mainframe would have taken hours," said Andrew Coleman, director
of software engineering at Syncsort. "Today, it can be done in
minutes, on a system costing a tiny fraction of the cost of a mainframe.
"That kind of price/performance creates new application
opportunities. High volume data analysis and data processing
applications that may previously have been prohibitvely expensive can
now be implemented in a cost-effective form."
Companies migrating large applications from their mainframe to
UNIX need the same powerful tools on the UNIX platform as they are
accustomed to using on the mainframe. SyncSort is the most frequently
installed third-party software product on mainframe systems.
More than 95 percent of Fortune 100 companies use SyncSort.
"UNIX is frequently the platform of choice today for implementing
commercial applications that process large volumes of data," said
Coleman. "For these applications, a high performance sort is critical,
particularly when moving large files into or out of a relational
database. The availability of SyncSort on Digital's UNIX platform
makes it easier for customers to get the best performing hardware and
software, whether migrating from IBM mainframes or any other platform."
"SyncSort is the industry standard for sorting, and the Digital
UNIX and OpenVMS versions deliver impressive performance and features,"
according to John O'Keefe, Digital's vice president of UNIX Marketing.
"Add the outstanding performance of Alpha and Digital, and we
have a winning solution for the growing client/server and mainframe
   downsizing markets," O'Keefe said.
