I hope someone can point me in the right direction?
My customer, G.E., just won a contract with NT&T, which I
believe is Japans version of AT&T. The contract is for a small
satillite ground station using VAXstation VLCs running OpenVMS.
Now here come the questions. The requirements are that the
workstations run Kanji and Kana (I'm still not to sure what this
is?). Also, if the development is done in english, can it be con-
verted to Japanese? If so how easy/difficult would that be? By
conversions they mean everything, documentation, all the menu
screens ect. The last question, at least for now, is if the develop-
ment is done in english, then converted to Japanese, could future
modifications be made in Japanese?
This is the fist time in my 12 years at DEC I've had a project
that was not "all english". Please excuse what might be dumb questions,
but I don't have a clue as to where to look.

First, send your message to GIAIBS. They will put you in touch with
the right people.
Second, I heard last month that DEC is thinking about starting another
business in japan converting english applications to Kanji.
Third, VMS is available in Kanji and works very well.
What is GIAIBS? GIA has a "help" desk for sales and support2 people
that need assistance with any foreign matters. They have been very
helpful in assisting a US software vendor convert a distribution
software package to kanji.

Phil,
I work in the US Area Digital Service org. and a relocatee from
Japan DEC. Let me help you go forward with your business.
NTT (Nippon Telephone & Telegram) is the one of the large accounts
of DEC Japan and is named as "Corporate Account," too. So, I want
to recommend you to contact with the account manager for NTT in
Japan.
Here are my responses to your questions;
* Kanji and Kana : These are the kinds of characters the Japanese use
to express the Japanese language. "Kana" is a set of phonetic
characters somewhat like the alphabet characters. "Kanji" is a
large set of symbolic characters, and one or combination of Kanji
characters means certain thing. The Japanese use both sets of
characters in normal writing.
* Conversion : Anything can be done. Right?
* Easy/difficult : It depends on how the application software has
been developed. A software specialist with the Japanese VMS
knowledge has to look into the program in order to evaluate the
whole conversion process to be needed. I believe Japan DEC will
support it. I know the ISE (International System Engineering)
group, who has developed the Japanese VMS, can do it for you.
* Future modifications : It again depends on how the conversion
would be done.
As long as the cost for conversion is concerned, you should not
evaluate it cheap, until we, Digital, become a true global company.
