| | Did the CMS group see much "action"? I haven't utilized CMS, but I was glad it
existed and expected to make use of their services this year.

| | With Sales focusing this year on sales to the existing customer base,
we have seen little work this year. We were place in the CIS EIC
which is not the type of work we do so we do not fit in their type
of business so we are expendable. We did loose money this past year
but that was based on lack of utilization by sales due to selling
to existing customer base. We have always broken even or lost a little
due to the type of business we are in. We are there to assist in the
sell and get the customer in as a Digital customer. We are not there
to make a buck but to meet expenses.
In these final days, we are hoping to be acquired by SALES as most
of our work is pre-sales consulting and occasionally doing a conversion
ourselves. We have been in existance for 7 years and have experienced
people in UNIX, IBM, HP, WANG, IBM Midrange, CDC, DG, UNISYS, you name it.
The CIS EIC wants to make money on the ALPHA MIGRATION Program....
VMS to OPEN/VMS or OSF1 not competitive conversions. There is not
enough money to fund a group for competitive conversions so.......TFSO....
If we have assisted your organization in the past and you feel that
we provide a useful service to the field, please let Don Zereski know
    this.

| | It seems to me that this organization would be better off "spun
off" from Digital.
I have used them in the past (a small amount) and was impressed
with their capabilities. It seemed to me that internal Digital
issues often got in the way of this organization really going
after business. I believe they were "held back" and had to wait
for sales to come to them...I'd bet most sales people don't know
they exist.
So, here's my proposal...
This is quite presumptous of me. Because I don't know any of the
individuals involved and don't know anything about the organization
I may be way off here. I don't intend to offend anyone. It just seems
to me that Digital throws lots of things away they may be salvagable.
If Digital sees fit to lay these people off Digital should...
1) Give the individuals full use of all tools that they have
used in their current positions. Digital obviously doesn't value
these tools as proprietary so why not give them away. These people
may use these as private consultants or in a new corporation.
2) Allow them a small amount of time (and Sales Update articles)
to sell themselves to Digital.
3) If the group wants to form a new corporation...make it a CMP
My basic reasoning here is that this organization provides value...
Digital doesn't seem to be able to get enough benefit out of it...
The people who do this should be able to try to get benefit out of it
(and Digital also since the conversions they will do will go to
DEC gear) if they wish to.
This could unleash a lot of creative energy from these people.
The people involved could also put up half there TFSO money as "venture
capital" in the new enterprise...

SUBJECT: The CMS is out of business
At the request of our management in the Cross Industries EIC, the
CMS has stopped taking on any new business. We have been instructed
to refer all requests for software conversion/migration assistance
to Larry Pelavin @MKO (SOLVIT::PELAVIN) at dtn 264-6925.

It is our understanding that the entire CMS team will be TFSO'd on
Monday, August 31. We have not yet been given a plan for transition
of existing projects, but we will continue to work the issue and
will notify affected account teams as soon as we know anything.

If any of you find you have a need in the future for the kind of
talent that has been available via the CMS, but on a contract basis,
I'll be keeping track of the team for a while. You can reach me at
my home number, 719-687-3784, after next week.

Best of luck to you all,

Center for Migration Services Has Been TFSO'd
The entire Center for Migration Services was TFSO'd this morning,
Monday, September 14. Our last day in the office will be Friday,
      September 18.
Our support services and functions have been transitioned back east to
other groups. You can use the following telephone number to request
      migration assistance:
                                 (800)832-6277
I am considering setting up an outside business to support IBM midrange
to Digital migrations and to take over support for the VAXination
Program. I have proposed this idea to the Digital Services
organization, specifically to Larry Pelavin and Ron Stokes. I would
call my company Migration Specialties, Incorporated (MSI) and would
offer migration services similar to those offered under the VAXination
Program (IBM System/36 and AS/400 migration assistance). I will also
offer general migration consulting services. If you feel this would be
of interest and that you would consider purchasing services from such
an organization, please let me know. This will influence my decision
      to form a company.
If you need assistance with IBM midrange migrations, or general
migration information after Friday, you can contact me at the following
