137.0. "FIIV Call for requirements (FIS)" by HANNAY::BRIDGEFORD (Fraser Bridgeford in Ayr) Wed Jul 15 1992 10:37
Factory Installed Interface to VMS (FIIV) Call for Requirements
---------------------- Please Distribute Widely. ----------------------
FIIV is the Installation Interface that the Customer or Customer Services
Engineer uses to bring up an OpenVMS system when a system that has been
Factory Installed with VMS is booted.
The primary goal of FIIV is to provide an easy mechanism for the customer
to quickly power up and configure the VMS operating system, and windowing
environment if present, without the use of distribution media.
Other goals have been to make the systems bootable and quickly usable by
non technical users, and to minimise the required amount of documentation.
FIIV has been improved over the years to incorporate the following
features;
. Ease of use improvements based upon Human Factors testing
. Reduction in the standard verbose VMS dialogue
. VAXstation 4000 requirements for a simpler startup including the removal
of cluster and network questions etc.
. Ability to recognise the presence of NAS software and respond
accordingly.
. On line documentation of FISed system configuration in the form of FIS
release notes. (*)
The next release will provide support for both OpenVMS ALPHA and OpenVMS
VAX. This release will be available for the OpenVMS ALPHA FT3 release.
To date we have already received feedback indicating that the following
enhancements to FIIV are required;
. Support for future hardware platforms
. Simpler dual host DSSI configuration
. Motif windowing interface for installation on workstations
. Kitted layered products (*)
. Tuning for specific system configurations ( especially two user
workstations )
. Incorporation of latest VMS and LAT patches (*)
. On-line context sensitive help (*)
. Pre-registering of PAKS for all software products ordered. (*)
. DECserver software configuration (*)
. Internationalisation of FIIV dialogue
. Inclusion of LMF V2
. Identify and include security lockdown procedures
The features listed above have not gone through the prioritisation and
feasibility process and therefore do not yet indicate any commitment to
incorporate these features in future versions.
If you have a requirement that needs to be met from FIIV that fits with
the goals and objectives of FIIV we would like to hear from you, even
although your requirement may already be listed above.
Please submit your requirements with an associated priority of
a) high - future business will depend on this -or- high cost savings
b) medium - incremental cost saving
c) low - nice to have ( no perceivable cost saving )
Where you have indicated cost savings, please give related figures and
justification.
Requirements should be sent to TAGART::BRIDGEFORD or TAGART::DANTON.
Alternatively they may be entered as a note in the IRNBRU::FIS_GENERAL
notes conference under note #5. The close for this call for requirements
will be 21st August 1992.
Many thanks
