| Hi Jan,
>Just heard that our dear beloved belgian Post Office has bought and
>installed FTSIE.
Out of interest what version of FTSIE and VMS is the customer using? I hope
they realise that FTSIE V1.4E has to be adapted to run over DNVext - something
that we sell as consultancy as V1.4E is not 'officially' supported over VOTS
V3.0.
FTSIE V2.0 for OpenVMS/VAX will be the official FTSIE Version that is supported
for DECnet/OSI and will soon be on the streets - Announcement will follow.
>Up until now they're quite happy with it. However they would like to know
>if one can change the ASCII/EBCDIC translation tables ad libidum.
Basically no! Ie. There are three tables that are available for code
conversions. (See the release notes for a fuller explaination). If he tampers
with these tables then in effect he will be doing something that isn't
supported.
If the the three conversion tables aren't enough and if he is willing to come
to some arrangement with his local office then anything is possible. This
arrangement will of course have to be documented.
So if he wants his code table changed either by Digital or by means of a utility
sell him consultancy.
>There are a couple of ASCII characters that they would like to see translated
>to some other EBCDIC Characters than is the case now...
So if you want to do this for $$ you can use $PATCH/ABSOLUTE if you know what
you're doing or some HEX editor out of the Toolshed.
If you want us to do it just quote your Project # and Cost Centre ;-)

| Hi John,
They're using V 1.4e without DNV Extensions. This should be OK ?!
About the conversion tables the customer found out that the
FTSIE$EBCDICGER.dat is quite similar to the DF3 table used on Siemens
but not exactly.
e.g: %x26 is translated to DEL character instead of ETB
%x15 ' ' ' NAK ' ' ' NL (or LF-CR)
%x4f ' ' ' O umlaut ' ' |
In the other direction, with the FTSIE$ASCIISRVS10 or FTSIE$ASCIIGER,
it seems that every character above %X80 is translated to the
equivalent hexadecimal EBCDIC character. It should be nice that for
instance the letter "a" with accents like "'", "`" or "^" is
translated to the equivalent letter or at least to the same letter
without an accent and not to nothing or anything else....
Hence his thought that the product is only made for a
German-talking-and-writing public.
Is there any major change in this area with V2.0 ?
Probably he'll patch it himself (as you said with patch/absolute) to
incorporate all characters of the French writing community....
And yes...I did read your reply, but could not answer right away as I
have to work on the other 25 calls as well....
cheers and many thanks for your answer

| Hi Jan,
Good point.
I'll ask the developer but I don't think ist was included in V2.0 as it
will be going into production this week. As you rightly say the code tabels seem
to have been set set up with more regard to the german community than the rest of
Europe. Maybe we will be able to change this in a maintenace release - no promises though.
I assume the customer is still using Version VMS Version < V5.5.
Will the customer get FTSIE Version 2.0 per update contract ?

164.4 | it IS V5.5-2 ! | BACHUS::BOLLEN | Jan Bollen - TSC Brussels | Wed Jul 14 1993 18:45 | 15 |
| Hi John,
I think we've had it. he IS using vms 5.5-2 so this is a slightly
unsupported configuration...
So we downgrade VMS to a version pre 5.5 or we'll install V2.0
when it hits the street and decnet/osi....?
If Decnet/osi has to be installed, why not using FTAM for this file
transfer with Siemens ?
cheers

It's happening so often these days ...

No need. Sell him consultancy to adapt V1.4E to DNVext or DECnet/OSI or
wait ~2 weeks fo the latest version. (That's what Product management has said)
> If Decnet/osi has to be installed, why not using FTAM for this file

In most cases it's a case of having to buy an extra Siemens FTOS (FTAM) license
which I think is still fairly expensive and if they already have a Siemens
Transdata environment then they already have FT-BS2000 installed even before
they think of interworking with Digital M/c's.
