145.0. "Leased line supported?" by DRAC::DSMAIL () Tue Sep 08 1992 11:45

My (our) customer is running FTSIE with no problem thru a dialup telephone
line. He configured his VAX as DCE and is using profile ISO8208.

Then he decided to run FTSIE over a leased line and problems begun.

Before going on further investigation I'd like to know if this is a supported
configuration. SPD is always talking about direct connection and modem
eliminator. Anyway I suppose that it should be no problems. Can anyone
confirm it?

Thanks in advance,
Herminia.

Please tell us what kind of problems. Give us version, trace and/or event
details.

This depends on what is meant under your term 'leased line'. Can you expand and
maybe tell us what how the whole thing is configured including the Siemens
side.

145.2Only tell me if it's supported...DRAC::DSMAILThu Sep 10 1992 12:5255

As I said in .0 I still have not investigated the whole problem, so the
picture is incomplete.

      SIEMENS side DEC side
        (???) (see below)
      ------------ ---------
           | |
           | +-------+ +-------+ |
           +------| modem | - - - - - - - - - | modem |------+
                  +-------+ Telephone +-------+
                                  line

  DEC side:

  VMS V5.3
  PSI-Access V4.3
X25router 2000 V1.1 (configured as DCE and Network profile ISO8208)
  VOTS V2.0
  FTSIE V1.4

Problem statement (still in words of customer) is:

This configuration is working fine while the telephone line is a common
switched line.

If they change to a leased line (this is a point to point (let's say permanent)
telephone (not PSDN) line) and don't change anything, this stops working. The
message is that the DTE is busy.

My initial guess is that the customer has done something wrong with the setup.
Before looking into the system I read the SPD and find:

>The connection between local and remote system is established via X.25 using
>PSDN. For connecting local systems X.25 (PSDN as well as modem-eliminators) as
>well as ethernet can be used.

As I'm not using neither PSDN nor modem-eliminator, I have a strong doubt
wether my configuration is supported or not.

So my question is: is this supported?

If it is, I'll go ahead and obtain the whole picture, traces, error messages,
etc.

Thanks in advance,
HErminia.

I hope you have FTSIE V1.4E and VOTS V2.0B with OCT 91 Fix kit? ;-)

If you're talking about the DTE being busy than I assume everything is
hunky-dory on Level2.

The fact that you mention leased line as opposed to switched makes me think
that the customer may want to use PVC's. If that's the case the answer is NO it
will not work as VOTS does not support PVC's.

To the question is it supported or not, I would take the approach and say that
VAX/FTSIE supports the common denominator between what Siemens/S.N.I. VOTS and
VAX P.S.I. supports. If VAX P.S.I and VOTS work as they should then VAX/FTSIE
should work as well and hence it should be supported - but I'm not the Product
Manager ;-}.

So I would tend to agree with your statement
>My initial guess is that the customer has done something wrong with the setup.

Hope that helps you get down to the cause of the problem.

Now I have a clearer idea about the context and action plan:

    - Install last patches (VOTS V2.0B and FTSIE 1.4E)
    - Verify the use of PVCs
    - Verify configuration.

Thaks a lot for your time.
