83.0. "And MS/DOS PCs?" by CESARE::CATERINI (C6 B8 = formula del bagno) Tue Nov 20 1990 19:47

Hi there,
my requests are very simple:

                                SCENARIO

Customer with Ethernet, 1 VAX, several PCs, 1 PDP, 1 Siemens BS2000.
They've already tried FTSIE, they liked it and now they bought it, BUT

From the PC they would like to:

        1) become a Siemens terminal
        2) do file transfers with the Siemens host

in note 67.3 are mentioned two products for PCs:

        a) FT-DOS which is an OSI file transfer.
        b) EMDS9750 which is a Siemens terminal emulator.

                                QUESTIONS

1) Where to buy a) and b) with Company, address, phone number etc.

2) Prices of a) and b)

3) Contacts and useful hints if any.

Thanks in advance and regards

Joe

The terminalemulation you mention is - as far as I know - CONWARE - see note 14

FT-DOS is - as far as I know- a Siemens-Product -> Note 28
83.2a simple solution (?)MUDIS3::RBOEDEKERWed Nov 28 1990 20:5326

EMDS is a Terminal-Emulation Product from Siemens for SINIX, MS-DOS, and
SCO/UNIX (WX200).

FT-MSDOS is the FTBS2000 for DOS-PC (like FTSIE for the VAX) . As you know,
FTSIE is only supported in configurations with FTBS2000. It is very
important to test it before you recomment it with other configurations
to your customer (and you never know if a later version still works)!!!

A simple and working solution to your problem is the following:

	Take FTSIE for filetransfer to BS2000
	Take MEPOSIE from Integrata for the 9750 emulation
	Take PCSA (now PATHWORKS for VMS) to connect the PC to the VAX

Then you can login to the VAX and then via MEPOSIE to BS2000. For the
filetransfer PCSA offers a FILE-SERVICE (DOS files are on the VAX), so you
can take FTSIE to BS2000 or NFT (Network File Transfer) like VAX COPY to send
files from the PC to the VAX.

All software for the PC-Integration you need is included in PCSA.

I hope this helps, Ralf

Re: -2

Thanks I'll pass the information

Re: -1

I know it'ld be better for us to use the uVax they have to sethost on the
Siemens from the PC and in fact is OK for file transfer, but one thing is
a SERVER and another is a HOST both from the perspective of licences cost
and performances.
BTW my request was mainly against a Siemens proposal to tie directly the
PCs to the BS2000 as dumb terminals and not on the LAN!!!

Thanks for the info's guys!

P.S. Do the German third parties practice the "try & buy"?

    ad PS: it depends - some of them do; usually Integrata is quite helpful
    - I never dealt with Conware.
