69.0. "VAX-SIMATIC_S5 as 3964R "Slave"?" by OSL09::IVAR (The Engine) Mon Jul 09 1990 12:47

    Our customer wants to use VAX-SIEMENS_S5 to communicate with a certain
    Siemens system by means of the 3964R protocol.

    The point is that they want the Siemens system to look at the VAX
    as a "plc" device, i.e. the VAX as the "Slave".

    Is it possible for a VAX running VAX-SIMATIC_S5 to act as a 3964R
    "Slave" to receive data from the Siemens (computer) system?

    VAX-SIMATIC_S5 is a high level programming interface to VMS
    applications, to exchange data with SIMATIC_S5 systems.
                                        ----------

    It supports write to and read from Simatic (initiated by the VAX) and
    write to the VAX (initiated by Simatic, called unsolicited input). It
    does not support "read from the VAX", (initiated by Simatic, called
    unsolicited output).

    The SIMATIC_S5 computer link protocol is based on the top of the 3964
    line protocol. The computer link messages exchanged, also called
    telegrams, can contain up to 128 bytes.

    If your customer is looking for a 3964 protocol emulator only, the
    ASSETS Library can supply you with some other packages like VAX
    DECSicon or DUST3964/VMS.
