67.0. "Ethernet base lan with Siemens 7500 VAXes and PCs" by GBI01::BENVENUTO () Mon May 28 1990 09:55

My name is Angelo Benvenuto and I work in SWAS in Genoa Italy, I'm involved
with a customer (a big technical OEM) that is building a lan connecting
VAXes, PCs, and a SIEMENS 7500 (BS200).

As I don't know Siemens at all I looked for help in this notes conference
    and I found a possible solution for customer's problem in
note 28.1 about Siemens connectivity.

The soultion we proposed to customer is a Ethernet based lan arranged as in
figure

When we discussed it with customer he expressed doubts about the Transadata
9688 and about the existence of TCP/IP software for SIEMENS.
Local SIEMENS office proposed him a soultion based on Siemens "mini-like"
machines talking via OSI to 7500, via serial lines to PC and via ethernet
TCP/IP to VAX. Something like this:

      +------------------+
      |   SIEMENS 7500   |
      |                  |
      |------------------|

                                |          +-----------+      |  VAX       |
                                +----------| PC  SINIX |      +------------+
                                           +-----------+             |
                                                 |                   |
           ===================================================================
                     ethernet

We ask for your help in order to determine:
if our solution is feasible
if TCP/IP software for Siemens exists and which is its name and distributor
which hardware/software Siemens components are required in order to build it

Thanks in advance

Your customer is right. There is as yet no LAN connections for Siemens
Terminal computers/Routers/Front-end-processors of the type 96%%.

The picture is a bit confusing as the LAN adapter 9632 is connected directly
to the 802.3 LAN. FT-BS2000-S is a File Transfer application running over
Siemens (NEA) protocols and over OSI(Transport) to our VAX/FTSIE product
and certainly not over TCP/IP and should not be represented as a box in the
picture above.

If you give us more details what you want to do it would be easier to give you
a concrete answer. I'd be very happy to come and visit Genoa in Bella Italia
in the next few weeks especially if you have any spare tickets for you know
what.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

>What applications does the customer intend to run over network, File-Transfer,
>Terminal emulations or task-task?

Customer intends to run file-transfer and terminal emulation:
terminal emulation is required for PC and VAX, file transfer is required for
vax (but it should be a plus if it were possible for PC too).
Now there is no comunication between VAX , Siemens and PC; (only ASCII file are
transported via tape). We are trying to build a solution and to indentifying
required products.

>If they are TCP/IP based see restrictions listed in Note 32.

I read that TELNET, FTP, SMTP, NFS and TFTP are supported; that should be more
than the necessary...

I draw the figure trying to remember the thing we discussed about with customer
and i surely made mistakes.
What i remember (and what we want to avoid if possible) is that in Siemens
local office's solution, PC have to be connected to a particular device (and
not directly to ethernet) in order to talk with 7500.

We want to offer a solution in which all nodes (PC, VAX and Siemens) are
connected to the same bus (ethernet) and perform file transfer and terminal
emulation operation.
We now that DECNET PCSA allow these operations between VAX and PC;
we are loking for something that allows file transfer and terminal emulation
between Siemens and VAX and between Siemens and PC using ethernet as
transmissive way.

I hope this is more clear
(I haven't ticket yet i'm looking for them but i think i have very few
possibilities to get them)

67.3LAN connectivity with SIEMENSHADRES::DITEPhaseV - Don't Worry! Be Happy...Thu May 31 1990 11:5778
Ciao Angelo,

	what is still not clear to me is what kind of PC's the customer is
using. Are they Siemens PC-MX/PC-MX2 (Unix based) or are they PC-D/PC-D2
(MS-DOS based)?

Assuming that they are, I will try to illustrate the possible connectivity
that is available: (in brackets the products required on VAX/VMS)

BS2000
======
FT=> PC-MX*,PC-D= FT-BS2000
FT=> PC-MX*	= FTP
FT=> PC-MX*	= FTAM
FT=> VMS	= FT-BS2000 (VAX/FTSIE)
		= FTAM	(VAX/FTAM)
		= FTP (Ultrix Connection)
TE=> PC-MX*/VMS	= TELNET (Ultrix Connection)

			PC-MX*
---------		=======
|	|		FT=> BS2000,PC-D= FT-SINIX
|	|		FT=> BS2000	= FTAM
| BS2000|		FT=> VMS	= FT-SINIX (VAX/FTSIE) not supported
|	|				= FTP (Ultrix Connection)
|	|				= FTAM (VAX/FTAM)
|	|		TE=> BS2000	= EMDS9750 / TELNET

|============================================================================|
	    |					    |
	---------				---------
	|	|				|	|
	| PC-D	|				| VAX   |
	|	|				|	|
	---------				---------

PC-D2/3
=======
FT=> BS2000,PC-MX* = FT-DOS
FT=> VMS	   = FT-DOS (VAX/FTSIE) not supported
TE=> BS2000	   = EMDS9750

				VAX/VMS
				=======
				FT=> BS2000	   = FT-BS2000 (VAX/FTSIE)
				FT=> PC-MX*,PC-D   = FT-BS2000 (VAX/FTSIE)
						     not supported
				FT=> BS2000,PC-MX* = FTAM (VAX/FTAM)
				FT=> BS2000,PC-MX* = FTP (Ultrix Connection)
				TE=> BS2000	   = 9750 / MEPOSI (3rd Party)
				TE=> BS2000,PC-MX* = TELNET (Ultrix Connection)

I hope that gives you an overview. If I have missed anything out I'd be grateful
for anybody out there completing/correcting the picture.

I'm still not sure from your answer which direction most of the FT or TE
traffic will be oriented towards. However assuming that it's a Siemens TRANSDATA
network then most of the traffic would initally be the directed towards
applications residing on the BS2000 host. If that's the case, then the
products to consider more closely are VAX/FTSIE / VAX/FTAM for FT and
MEPOSI (3rd Party Product) for TE. Remember that VAX/FTSIE is a 'german'
product and that you would have to discuss any issues regarding
use of the product in Italy with Product Management (Anne Hennies @FRO
DTN 764-3205).

Hope that helps.

Bona Fortuna.

67.4FT-DOS & EMDS9750 - Where to BUY?CESARE::CATERINIC6 B8 = formula del bagnoThu Aug 30 1990 13:2917
Hi John,
I'm writing to you after seeing your note on the Siemens note file about
LAN connectivity, very clear indeed.
The only thing I need now is where to buy/try both FT-DOS and EMDS9750
for an MS/DOS compatible PC.
The customer has several Taiwan clones connected already to a uVax2000
thru PCSA and he'ld like to use them also as Siemens terminals as well as
Autocad stations.

I'ld like to know the company name, contacts, prices and eventually if they
have any distributor over here in Italy.

Regards

Joe
