"IBM, Siemens Team on 64-Megabit Chip" (The Boston Globe, 1/25/90,
PP:34)
West Germany's Siemens AG and International Business Machines Corp. said they
would team up to develop a new chip in a bid to fend off competition from
Japanese manufacturers. IBM president Jack Kuehler said the agreement is the
first of its kind between IBM and another major computer maker to develop an
entire generation of computer chips. A 64-megabit chip would represent a huge
advance in computer memory. The industry recently went to a 4-megabit
standard from the previous one-megabit chip which stores a million bits of
data. The agreement comes a little over a week after U.S. Memories Inc., a
venture formed to ease reliance on Japan for 4-megabit chips, said the project
was terminated.
