| Hi Jan,
I tried the number for you too (and got no answer) I'll see if I can
find the spec sheets they sent to me 18 months or so ago. I'll also
check the main telephone directory - the one I used is a local directory
that you have to pay to be in, maybe they don't bother ! - in case they
do still exist under their own name.

| hi Graham,
appreciate the effort! Thanks VERY much. If you could find those
specs, I should would be interested in them or any address / phone
info contained in them.
Thanks again,
Jan.

531.3 | Seems to be gone also... | BIS1::STES | Jan, Belux SIMD, 856-7658 | Wed Feb 21 1996 08:49 | 12 |
| Hi all,
I tried calling international information here in belgium, on both
the Leicester and the Stoke-On-Trent location, but no luck.
FYI the shop that I got the amp from (here in Belgium) is also out of
business... Seem to have gotten myself in a nice jam.
Still the (musical) quality of the amplifier is great!
Thansk for ANY pointers... Is there anybody else who had recent
dealings with crimson or its successors?

I checked the Yellow Pages last night and found :-
Crimson Elektric
Phoenix works
500 King Street
Longton
Stoke-On-Trent
Staffs
Phone : 01782 330520
however, I've checked the phone number and it's dead so it seems that
the Companty I mentioned in a previous reply is indeed the same one -
same address, different name, new phone number ! I'll try their number
again for you this morning.
Graham
BTW, when I find the spec's I'll let you have a copy.

Hi Jan,
good news ! I just called the Cycad number (01782 311572) and a voice
at the other end said "good morning, Crimson...". I then explained the
situation and he said Cycad was just a trading name.
So, give them a call and see what they can do !
BTW, I live 12 miles from Longton, so if you need anything
collecting or delivering I'll be happy to try and help out.

| Graham,
Saw your new notes a few minutes ago. Again, thanks very much for your
effort.
I tried the number again just now, but did not get an answer.
Maybe I'm calling outside office hours. I will try and call again
tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.
I would hope they could point me to a local Belgian importer or
ditributor so that I could get the repairs done there or at least via
that channel. Should that prove to be impractical I may get back to you
on your generous offer to help out collecting or delivering.
Many thanks,
--Jan.

531.7 | Success at last | BIS1::bhp832.bro.dec.com::stes | | Thu Feb 22 1996 13:31 | 14 |
| Hi all,
Thanks to Graham, Success in the End.
I talked to them, and they will be sending me the parts I need by mail.
The problem is just bad connections in the selecetor switches, so we were
able to identify the parts by phone. It seems to be a common problem.
In case anybody is interested, Crimson packed it in some years ago, and
was taken over by ... (didn't catch that). The good news is they will be
back on the UK market with some new amps over the next few months:
prototype testing has just ended. If their orignal amps are anything to go
by, this may be worth looking into for you price contious purists out-
there (good sound - very musical - good dynamics - reasonable prices).

| Hi Jan,
glad you got it sorted ! someone I shared a house with as a student had
a Crimson pre/power combination that really impressed me, if the new
stuffs half as good it'll be worth a listen. His had two Mono power
amplifiers that were all heatsink (one red LED on each I think) an a
pre-amp which was powered by a PP9 batteryfrom what I remember it had a
volume control, a 2 or 3 way input selector and on on/off switch - very
minimalist !
Graham
|
531.9 | Minimalist indeed | BIS1::BHP832::stes | | Fri Feb 23 1996 10:46 | 24 |
| Graham,
correct, VERY minimalist, as you stated.
Pre-amp has on-off switch including source or tape selection, source
selection (tuner or disk on my old one, the newer have tuner, disk, CD),
balance, and volume of course. No sound control (treble or bass...).
The Pre-amp takes its power from the Amp, via a special cable. The power
amp itself is plugged in, and has one LED and an on-off switch.
BUT, as I have said before, VERY good price/quality. When I bought mine
(way back) there were power amp setups avaialable: either 2 monoblocks (100
watts each) or one "stereo" block (50 watts per channel). However, if I
recall correctly, it is possible to turn the "stereo" block into a
monoblock and buy a second monoblock if you needed/wanted the power. For
finacial reasons i bought the stereoblock. I have never felt the need to
upgrade, I expect this is due to the great dynamic response of the system.
So yes, I believe that if past performance is anything to go by, these new
Crimson amps ARE worth looking in to.
Kind regards,
--Jan
