527.0. "Sound proof/insulation" by KERNEL::HOGGAND () Wed Nov 15 1995 14:40

    Hi,

Has anyone got any experience or info on how to sound-proof a wall?

I need to put some sound proofing on the wall behind the speakers as
the next door neighbour is complaining. I'm looking at constructing a
frame the size of the wall from plasterboard and padding it with loft
insulation. This will have to be makeshift as I live in rented
accommodation and cannot fix anything to the wall.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

    Thanks, Dave

    Dave,

try Egg cartons - those paper mache things - the loft insulation stuff
will probably work, but it's a lot more expensive, and nasty stuff to
have around the house unless it's sealed in.

Also, what sort of a building is it ? if you share floor joists, or if
    it's a non-load bearing wall I don't think you'll stop the Bass getting
    through.

If I remember back to when I was helping modify a terrace house to make
it a Hi-Fi shop the main thing was to cut the floor and roof joists and
fit an RSJ. This along with a false wall solved the problem - however
    this is a bit permanent.

Alternativly get a better Hi-Fi ! The better the quality of the noise
the less likely people are to complain....

A better hifi indeed! I've gone and bought a Numerik so I'll not be
buying anything else for a while.

I could always try and keep the volume down, but that just doesn't seen
    right :-)
