521.0. "Pioneer 702 amp vs. A400X ?" by WARS::JERZYNSKI () Thu Jun 01 1995 16:19

    (xposted from audio...)
        I am trying to evaluate the pioneer amplifier xx-702(?)
        I do NOT have the posibility to listen to it somewhere.
        I did listen to the Pioneer A400X, which seems to be a
        special version for UK market, I like the sound,
        the sound-for-buck, and I know it has good rewiews in UK.
        BUT I dont like its lack of features.

        Can somebody please comment on whether the design of the
        feature-rich 702 amp is similar / superior to what can be
        found inside the A400X ? With the 702, would I be paying
        more for the features alone, or did somebody actually
        experience better sound from this box?
        I am a bit confused, because I can't seem to find any
        rewiews on the 702.

        The A400X has a max. output impulse current 15.6 amperes.
        What is the max. current of the 702 ?

        I will be driving DALI-850 speakers, direct ported,
        relatively high sensitivity, 3-way, 500W.
        Signal source will be a pioneer PD-802 CD player.

        Thanks for any input,
        zj

I don't know the model 702, but I suspect that if it is similar in price to the
A400X, then the increased facilities will probably lead to decreased sound
quality (incresed component count and decreased component quality)

Other than that general observation, see if anyone else knows anything

521.2Kenwood alternative?CHEFS::GERRYTTue Jun 27 1995 14:007
    Perhaps the Kenwood KA-3020SE would fit the bill, with plenty of useful
    facilities and good dynamic sound too?

    I suppose it all depends what you're going to connect it to...front end
    and speakers??
