517.0. "Ethernet cable interconnects ?" by WARS::JERZYNSKI (Zygmunt JERZYNSKI) Thu Apr 13 1995 09:03

Has anybody tried to make his own interconnects,
based on short runs of standard BICC thin ethernet cable ?

Would the 'musical' quality of such home brew interconnects be
    any good ?
Or at least better than standard 'out-of-the-box' interconnects ?

One more: Is it safe to assume that the shorter the lousy
interconnect (say 15 cm), the less harm it introduces ?

    Thanks for any comments

The shorter the interconnect the better. However even a short run of
poor quality interconnect will have an effect.

As for Ethernet cable - I've no idea.

As an aside it's better to have a long(er) run of low voltage
interconnect than speaker cable (Up to about 5 meters). ie

    Source - Pre ---------------------------------- Power - Speaker

    is better than

    Source - Pre - Power ---------------------------------- Speaker

One thing to be aware of with thin Ethernet cable is that it is 50 ohm
impedance - CD Transport to DAC cable needs to be 75 ohm.

As far as I'm aware, the quality of the cable is quite high (if price is
anything to go by).

Other than that, suck it and see (hear)
