489.0. "Ghetto Blasters..." by KERNEL::HOGGAND () Mon Aug 08 1994 11:58

    Hi,

After investigating the walkman scene, I have decided that a 'ghetto
blaster' may be a better option (tho' jogging would be a little more
    difficult!)

I am looking for one that has a CD player, radio and tape (I don't need
a dual tape deck) and optionally speaker out sockets so I can connect a
pair of normal speakers if desired.

Does anyone have any personal favourites? I don't expect it to sound
like my LINN setup - but someone with good sound quality would be nice.

    Cheers, Dave

The best C.D ghetto's I have heard are the Panasonic range, Very clear
treble and good bass, they even tape quite well!! and if you add decent
    speakers they sound excellent....

Well, I listened to a few and finally plumped for a Panasonic.

I must admit that I am quite impressed with what it can do. CD
reproduction is good, as is the tape. The only thing that I am not
totally happy with is the radio reception. dmittedly, I live in a radio
blackspot an simply wrapping an indoor FM ariel around the supplied one
    cleared that little problem up.

    Well, that's the bonus gone.....

Admittedly in the 50 range I compared a Sony to a Panasonic for just stereo
tape and radio. In this instance the Sony was streets ahead in the radio
reception department. Both were comparable in terms of sound quality due to
the plastic speakers and insufficient power.

Panasonic are the overall best, I have the "top of thr range one", CD
    drawer etc...Very good output!
