475.0. "Digital recording: DAT, DCC, Minidisk. Which?" by NSIC00::KLERK (M/S: ERB01 / 2.15 DTN 7843-8644) Mon Mar 28 1994 11:24

  I have a chance to duplicate about 200 hours of studio master
  tapes (analog, 38 cm/sec, 15 ips) and obviously, I want to ensure those
  copies are the best possible for future enjoyment and their potential
  use as master.

  What would be considered a good storage medium? "Digital" seems the
  word, but neither technology really seems to be in for a long (supported)
  life yet:

   - DAT tape
   - DCC tape
   - Minidisk

  Apart from quality, is there a real price difference/hour of recording
  medium?

  Alternatively, VHS VCRs as HiFi recording machine, analog. In this case,
  would it matter whether you record on SP or LP speed? (the picture does
  show a difference, but will sound too?)

475.1 So agian, DAT wins. SUBURB::POWELLMNostalgia isn't what it used to be!Mon Mar 28 1994 17:388

    	I'll add to my reply to this in ELESYS::AUDIO, the best
    reproduction would definitely come by using DAT as the re-recording
    media. Both Minidisk and DCC use algorithyms (sp?) to reduce the amount
    of digital data stored with an inherent (minor) loss of audio quality
    and VHS Hi Fi only gives a reproduced quality equivilent to FM Radio.

475.2One sensible suggestion (and one not so...)COMICS::FLANDERSDI remember the look in your eyeTue Mar 29 1994 14:367
Alternatively, why not use CD-R, after all the recording media aren't too
pricey and the replay hardware is readily available.

On the other hand - get it pressed on vinyl ;^)

    ... Try a SuperBeta Video & PCM (Pulse Code Modulator ?) as used by a
    lot of recording studios before the coming of DAT. With a suitable tape
    the quality should be a least as good as DAT.

    BTW, if you come across a 'spare' PCM anywhere, I'd like to buy one....
