469.0. "PIONEER SecretCODE, HELP!!!" by RTOVC0::SUPPORT_RW () Mon Feb 21 1994 12:26

%x-posted in XNEWS rec.audio.car

I've really blown it this time.

I bought a car with a PIONEER KEH-9080SDK Stereo Cassette player
with a SecretCODE feature. I had no idea what it actually did
and never thought twice about since it had never had a code in
it. I've used it for over a year, but now it seems I've entered
some number by accident and now it asks for this number when I
turn it on.
In short, my stereo is now so secure that I can't use it myself.
I get 3 tries to guess it every day but since its a 4 digit
number there's not much hope of guessing it.

I spoke to someone from a Radio Shop whow gave me the address
of Pioneer, and said I should send it in with the ownership
papers and ther'll probably be a charge to decode it.
Problem is I don't have the ownership papers for the thing
nor does the guy who I bought the car off back then.
There's no chance it was stolen, but I guess it makes
little sense to ask Pioneer about it since they'll probably
have a firm policy on this anyway.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Try contacting the dealer you bought it from. He may be able to
contact the previous owner who may still remember the code (unless
his memory is a soggy as mine).

Thanks for the reply Bill,

Firstly, I bought the car private and the owner had got the Stereo
from another car he'd owned previously and the stereo was already
in that one when he bought it.(4-5 years ago)

Second, I entered the code myself, thats why its asking for it
now for the first time. What happened when I used to start the car
was the stereo would display "PASS" for a few seconds before
coming on. A week or so ago I remember having hit a button
before the "PASS" had gone away then was wondering why the stereo
didn't come on. Being a wally I then proceeded to fiddle with
all the buttons, while driving, until it worked again. What I must
have done is hit the "PLAY" button while a 4 digit sequence
was on the display. That sequence is now the code, and instead
of displaying "PASS" it now displays "CODE" and after 3 attempts
it displays "ERR" and is unusable. Since I was driving at the
time I don't know what the number was/is.
Hence the Stereo is now "Secure".
Of course if I knew then what I know now I would not have done
what I did, but that's neither here nor there. The fact is
I either have to guess the code, for which I get 3 guesses/day,
or get it Decoded by Pioneer, for which the Ownership papers
are required, or crack it somehow. Someone suggested
a short-circuit might do it, but I'm not sure.

wasn't there a discussion somewhere about putting stereos in
	the freezer?

somebody must remember...i dunno if it works.

re: .2 One hundred thousand apologies. I realized the moment I
started reading your reply that yes, you did say that you had entered
the code yourself. I am the one who is always complaining about
other folks not reading or listening to what I say, and now I go out
and do the same thing myself. I'll try not to let it happen again.

469.5How Vauxhall code it.UPROAR::WEBSTERMany old stringWed Feb 23 1994 15:3513

Don't know if this is relevant, but my other half recently bought a
second hand Vauxhall with a coded sterio and no past vehicle history
etc. The sterio doesn't require a the code when turned on but just in
case we went along to a Vauxhall dealer who examined the unit so they
could provide the serial no information to Vauxhall services folks.
The service folks posted info on the default key code etc. to us a few
weeks later after checking the car details.

Needed the logbook and proof of ownership at the Vauxhall dealer and it
    cost a few quid.

Thanks for the tips,

BTW The freeze technique failed miserably. I put by fridge on MAX
such that even the stuff in the regular fridge part froze so
the freezer must have pretty damn cold, but no luck.

I've now got to get a "Staatlichesomethingorothererklaerung"
from the polizei to prove ownership then I'll get a radio shop
to send it off to pioneer for "Geraetediebstahlschuetzdecodierung".

Its not so complicated here in Germany after all. :-)

Richard.
469.7I guessed it!RTOVC0::SUPPORT_RWFri Mar 04 1994 09:1412
Hey Cool, I guessed the number this morning. Gottseidank!

I had my doubts anyway about convincing the German police it
wasn't stolen so I decided to have a go a cracking it.

I knew it was limited to the digits 1-6 so there was only
7000 or so possible combinations.

I will admit to there being a fraction of luck involved. :-)
