*WARNING* - Non-techie alert... At the weekend I bought a lead to connect my video to my amplifier (SCART to phono plug). When I play the TV signal through it, it sounds fine. My problem comes when I play back a video, either one I've recorded myself or a pre-recorded one. Then I get a high-pitched background noise. The video recorder is a Ferguson low-fi model and the amplifier is an Arcam Alpha. Can anyone please suggest a solution? I am distinctly non-technical so I hope there's an easy answer. Thanks in advance, Paul Ciclitira

458.1 | Try Hi-Fi VHS with NICAM. | UPROAR::WEBSTERM | any old string | Mon Nov 08 1993 14:11 | 14 |
Paul, >The video recorder is a Ferguson low-fi model. When using your video as an audio source you will get reasonable sound quality when listening to TV broadcasts, this could be considerably improved by going sterio/NICAM either by getting a decoder or upgrading to a better video. However when listening to VHS tapes, either pre-recorded or taped at home, the sound quality will be very poor as you will be using the linear audio tracks on the tape. If you upgrade to a Hi-Fi video recorder most pre-recorded tapes will sound better as will any you record. Note that recordings that were recorded with your old recorder will still sound poor when played on a Hi-Fi recorder. Mike Webster @ IME

Hi Mike, I don't think "sounds better" quite quantifies the difference between an older "Linear audio" type VCR and any of these NICAM/Hi-Fi videos. Paul, Off-air recorded NICAM TV programs are mostly stunning. Pre-recorded/rental videos are stunning. Just drop a note if you want a brief dolby b/c cassette recording to try to demonstrate the difference. After all you are probably appreciative of sound quality, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this! Good luck in fixing the fault on the Ferguson. Rob.

Thanks for the replies. In the end I couldn't solve the problem so I took the cable back :-( I'll just have to wait till the video packs up and I can afford a new one... Paul |
