457.0. "DJ Turnables and Mixers" by BOOZER::CLEMINSON99 () Thu Oct 28 1993 13:00

I am about to buy a home mixing system, 2x decks, mixer, mats, etc. I was
wondering if anyone had any useful information on what I should be paying for
the equipment and if
This will be my first system of this sort as I have been using my mate's
Technics 1210 system for the past year, but unfortunately I cannot afford the
Technics tag. Will the system as given below give me comparable performance for
the price I will be paying.
The system I intend to buy is from Richer Sounds and comprises of x2 Ariston
Decks @ 150 each and a KAM GM25 mixer @ 85. I have been advised to buy some
Stanton cartridges, I would like to know if 26ea is a good price and are they
essential as the decks come with domestic carts. Basically the system will cost
around 400.
If anyone knows of any cheaper decks of the same quality or is selling some
decks second-hand for a good price and lives somewhere near the Midlands

Cheers
Steve

What are you planning to do with the system? Play music or make music? Is it
for playing or recording? What do you mean by 'performance'?

Hi-fi decks might not come up to speed fast enough for you. You could use
slipping mats but even then the motors may not be powerful enough to get the
the mat+record up to speed quickly enough.

If you'll ever turn the platters backwards by hand, you need a cartridge that
can take it - almost none can. The Stantons are very tough and will probably
be OK, though I wouldn't do it.

For what its worth, this months "What HiFi?" rag was singing the praises
of the Ariston deck as a robust "disco" deck.

They claimed that since you could kit out 2 Aristons (with Staunton
Cartridges) for the price of a Technics, that made them very good value
for the up and coming DJ.

I think they reckoned a price of 160 per deck.
