453.0. "Tonearms: Rega vs Linn" by SMURF::SZCZYPEK () Tue Oct 19 1993 15:45

    Hello everyone,
I was wondering what your opinions may be regarding the fitting of
a Rega RB300 to an LP12. Some time ago I came across a note which
stated, if I remember correctly, that the RB300 works reasonably well
with the LP12, but a Linn tonearm would work better.
Does the RB300/LP12 combination outperform an Akito/LP12 combo?
Would I be better off purchasing a used Ittok LVII rather than a new
RB300? I assume an Akito or an RB300 will outperform the old Basik+.

The RB300 is a good arm and suits a lot of decks. When there weren't really
any alternatives it was fine on an LP12; I'd prefer it to an old Basik+. But
the Akito is a *really* good arm on a Linn deck, and I suspect (but don't know
for sure) it would do a better job there. I was never very impressed by any of
the various Ittoks I've heard, and always thought the Akito a better product -
probably because I couldn't forget price/performance. And a used arm sounds
risky to me.

Background/caveats: I haven't heard an RB300 on an LP12 for a long time, and
certainly haven't compared it with an Akito there. I used one in my Townshend
Rock Reference for a while (I had to wait for the Excalibur) and it did a good
job there, outclassed or not. Ittoks I've only heard in LP12s; Akitos I've
heard and admired in Basik, Axis and LP12 decks but haven't heard them anywhere
else. If the Basik+2 on my old Axis is anything to go by, it doesn't compare -
it was mostly pretty good but wasn't too detailed and had severe LF resonance
problems. Final caveat: I don't actually like LP12s very much, so you may well
want to disregard my opinion...

    Good question.

I use to have a Rega RB300 on and LP-12 which replaced an old LV-II.
The RB300 comfortably outperformed this Ittok - much to the amazement
of Linn products. How ever newer LV-II's (including your's Dave) beat
the RB300. As for the Akito, I've never really listened to it but I
would expect it to be a fairly close run thing.

It was a pre-production model with - I think - higher bearing tollerances
    than the final production models.

A very old version with the two piece counterweight.

PS. ``Faith'' by ``The Cure'' is a very good album for showing up
    differences in tonearms.

You might want to know that Newbury Audio currently has an ex demo Akito
for the very reasonable sum of 99 pounds

PS I have no connection with Newbury Audio other than as a very satisfied
customer

I've heard in the past that the RB300 doesn't work well in the LP12. I
don't know if that situation has changed since the Cirkus arrived.
453.6Price sounds good...LOCORE::szczypekThu Oct 21 1993 15:4713
Re .4

The price does sound good. Unfortunately for me I'm in the US. I
think I'm going
to have to do some good old-fashioned listening tests. I have a good
rapport with
a Rega dealer here and believe I can have a home trial with the RB300.
Finding
a local Linn dealer whose willing to let me do the same could be a problem.

Thanks everyone for your input.
