452.0. "Rotel CD Problem..." by TRUCKS::MORRIS_D () Tue Oct 19 1993 13:44

I bought a Rotel 855 (?) CD player about two years ago. I have been very happy
with it... until recently.

I noticed that over the past few months, the player occasionally "skips" when
playing a CD. It is only a brief glitch, but could result in a repeat of the
last quarter of a second, or a jump. It is sthe sort of skip you get with a
dusty CD. Naturally, I cleaned the CDs in the appropriate manner, but this did
not clear the problem. It happens increasingly on all CDs, whether new or old,
mine or borrowed, scratched or pristine.

It was suggested that the laser lens might be dirty, so with some apprehension,
I opened the player, noticed the astonishing amount of empty space inside and
gently cleaned the lens with alcohol and a cotton bud. It still works! but the
problem is still there.

It's almost as if the ECC has degraded and can no longer be bothered with
correcting the pressed-in errors on the disk.

Has anyone any suggestions? I know the next step is to take the thing in for
repair, but I noticed that there is just one PC board. If the problem is
electronic, I know just what the local repair man will do...

452.1Laser getting sticky ?COMICS::FLANDERSDI remember the look in your eyeTue Oct 19 1993 14:508
I don't _know_, but the symptons suggest the possibility that the laser
is getting stuck on the guides, then the servo is overcorrecting. It could be
dust on a guide rail, something like that.

If you have the lid off then it's probably easy to check.

I wondered about that, but the assembly seemed to move quite freely. I'll
double check for dust before "entrusting" it to a repairer.

452.3It's fixed...TRUCKS::MORRIS_DFri Oct 29 1993 12:267
FWIW, I ended up entrusting it to a local repairer and 20 + VAT (and one day)
later, I now have a working machine. The invoice talks about "service and clean
laser assembly", so dust etc. was probably the problem. I am much relieved it
did not involve new parts. I am also pleasantly surprised that the repairer did
not rip me off for more!

452.4Three Cheers for Gamepath!TRUCKS::MORRIS_DFri Jan 21 1994 12:4916
An update...

Prompted by a reader of this notesfile, I contacted Gamepath in Milton Keynes,
who distribute Rotel in the UK (there is no "Rotel UK").

They immediately knew what the fault was ( a dodgy top bearing assembly),
arranged for my player to be picked up, repaired and returned in the space of one
week, total cost to me of 11.75, the cost of carriage, only. They also resoldered
some output connections, as they had been known to go dry-jointed.

I am absolutely delighted, especially as I could swear that it sounds even better
than before!

Excellent service.
