    At the back of my CD player there is what looks like a plug for a small
    jack, it is labelled 'Digital Output'.  In the instruction book it
    says not to use the port...

    has anyone got any more information on this ?

    you can connect an external Digital to analogue convertor to this
    socket. Your CD player already contains one, but some suppliers provide
    external higher quality DAC's. Think of it as a possible upgrade path.

You'll probably need to refer to the Philips/Sony Orange books for the specs,
on the other hand, I think I remember seeing something about this in the AUDIO
notes conference (on VAXWRK::)
