438.0. "Reception problems" by CHEFS::IMMSA (adrift on the sea of heartbreak) Thu Aug 19 1993 17:58

Can anyone suggest how I can get a better FM (stereo) signal.

I have a very standard Technics set up with a Denon tuner.

The arial is about six feet off the ground on top of a wall unit and
is a box with a spiral coil at the back and two extending pieces which
stick out either side, or poiting straight up if you want. In the center
of the box is a fine tuner. I think it came from Tandy or similar.

Reception is not bad during the day but seems to drop off later so I
have to go into mono mode on the tuner.

The area I live in is reasonably flat with the usual quota of trees
around, none too near the house.

Would it help to get an arial up in the loft? Would the arial I have
already, repositioned in the loft, give better reception?

Sorry if this seems very basic to you buffs but it is frustrating the
hell out of me and I really would like to resolve it.

There are some other notes in here about aerials, and the gist is that
the best solution is to get a roof-mounted FM aerial. They're not
incredibly expensive. I think I paid Reading Aerial Services about
40-50 quid for mine including fitting. You can put an aerial in the
loft, but you get much more benefit having it outside.

    Thanks for that.

Also for demonstrating how to spell aerial :-)

Its not a word I write very often.

438.3Polaris/zation lessonRDGENG::FRYBrentTue Oct 05 1993 14:2424
Slice-of-life-story on aerials and polaris/zation ...

I wanted to get KISS FM 100.0, not that I go for that sort of
"music", but because a "friend" liked it, so I'm open-minded and
thought I'd try it.

Purchased a fantastic outdoor FM aerial, whacked it on the co-ax, but no
KISSes.

Took it back, went to Maplin's. Guy asks me "Which station was
it you wanted?". He looks it up and says "Funny, that's a vertically
polaris/zed transmitter."

So, I rotated my horizontal aerial to vertical (after modifying the
bracket) and WOW, there it is, and what's more, lots of stations
seem to have some sort of mixed polarization both horizontal
and vertical, so they all come in fine it seems.

Looks weird up on the mast, but what reception! I don't listen to KISS
anymore, BTW.

Wow,...I had my antenna put up purely to receive KISS but the guy
has installed it horizontally polarised..works OK but thanks for
tip...if we ever get some decent weather again I might up and
    	play!
