437.0. "Linn Keilidh Floor Mounting " by NEWOA::SUTCLIFFEJ () Mon Aug 16 1993 17:57

    Hi,

    I have a question about the stands which are available for Linn
    Keilidh speakers. I have just moved house and my speakers are now sited
    on Wooden floors rather than solid concrete. I have noticed a
    warming/tuning of the previously quite dry bass. However with tracks which
    drive more than usual I am experiencing a lack of control. Has anyone
    fitted the ceramic plinths to either Keilidhs or Kabers ? What effect do the
    plinths have, and do you think that this might help remedy the problems
    I am experiencing ?

    Regards,
    Jonathan

    I suppose the floor is a likely culprit, but the problem might be down
    to the room itself being a different shape, or some other factor. Is
    the rest of the room of the same construction as before, or do the
    speakers now (for example) back onto a partition wall rather than a
    brick one ? Bass quality usually suffers in smaller rooms, too.

    Trevor,

    Speaker siting as much as before , as is the shape and size of the
    room. I too think the floor is the culprit ! I wonder if perhaps
    mounting the speakers of some concrete slaps rather than direct into
    the floor boards could provide an answer.

    Any suggestins welcome.

    Regards,
    Jonathan

    I suppose you could try to borrow a set of the plinths to see if they
    help. You may well find that there is no easy technical solution, other
    than to experiment with moving things around until you get the best
    compromise. Is there any scope for rotating all the room contents round
    through 90/180/270 degrees, or just changing the position of the
    furniture ? I know that my system sounds a lot better when the sofa
    isn't in the room, but then there's nothing comfortable to sit on...
    Perhaps you could draw a diagram.

    I'm not familiar with these speakers but, assuming they are spiked, you
    could try driving some cross-head screws HARD into the floorboards at
    the positions where the spikes go, and then sit the spikes in the screw
    heads. This should improve the coupling with the floor, and could
    tighten the sound up.

437.5The new stands workKERNEL::LEIGHAAndrew Leigh, UK CSC BasingstokeWed Aug 18 1993 19:249
Jonathan,

The new granite plinths for Keilidhs and Kabers have different effects for
the Keilidhs as they do for the Kabers. In the Keilidhs they tighten and
generally clean-up the bass and better define the treble. In the Kabers, which
already come on cast iron stands, the treble becomes less harsh and the bass
is becomes deeper.

    Andy,

    I think I'll give the stands a try ! On that subject can someone
    recommend a dealer within reasonable distance to Basingstoke who would
    be likely to offer to loan the Plinths to me ?

    Regards,

Jonathan,

The two nearest dealers are Audio-T in Basingstoke and Newbury Audio. Both
are good dealers who lend equipment and offer home demonstrations.

437.8Just to clarify...KERNEL::HOGGANDFri Aug 20 1993 15:127
    Andy,

    Are you saying that Audio T are good dealers, or that they are good at
    loaning equipment?

    Dave.

437.9A dealer which does not loan equipment is not a good dealerKERNEL::LEIGHAAndrew Leigh, UK CSC BasingstokeSat Aug 21 1993 13:5212
Dave,

I have not dealt with any other Audio T branches other than Basingstoke. I am
been very pleased with the service I have received from Basingstoke Audio T.
They set-up my LP12 very well, do good demonstrations and are to be happy
to offer a home demonstration or loan equipment.

They do not stock as much of the Linn range as Newbury Audio (only 2 LP12's and
no Keltics), but they do have a greater range of other brands.

437.10Partial thumbs-up for Audio-TKERNEL::HOGGANDMon Aug 23 1993 18:1113
    Andy,

    I think my inference about Audio-T was unjustified. I too have been
    happy with the way in which they set up my Linn and when it was
    Cirkus'd they did offer to bring it round to my house. Also, they did
    offer to to lend me the Keilidh's (although I was so sold that I didn't
    need a home dem :-)

    My comment was to do with a recent experience where they fed me some
    bull about Dolby Prologic. They are far more competent with audio.

    Dave.
