My system is probably now fairly well-balanced, the main bits comprising: Arcam Alpha CD player Naim 72/HICAP/140 EPOS ES11 speakers If I were going to spend some money on it, there are quite a few choices: - "better" CD player - external DAC - NAP250 instead of 140 - new speakers I've never really been convinced of my ability to spot big differences in DACs/CD players. A 250 appeals to the "can't have too many watts" side of my nature, and I would be happy to get a second-hand one. The ES11s are good speakers, their main failing in my view is lack of detail. I'm not sure that I want to spend any more money on it at the moment, but I have got a couple of small windfalls on the way. So, if you were going to spend up to say 800 quid on the system, how would you do it ? Trevor

Upgrade the speakers - try listening to the LINN Kailidhs (sp?). Also, what interconnects are you using between the source and the amps and the speakers? Dave (who just bought the speakers but can't spell them!) | |||||

Trevor I havent heard the Arcam CD or ES11 speakers so Iam not sure about how you could improve on them. Certainly an upgrade to a NAP250 should improve things for you with better control of the bass and more lucid at the top end. As for interconnects what about trying Linns own cable, I had some made up by Stereo Stereo my local Linn/Naim dealer. At about 20 for a 1 metre phono/phono the most expensive part are the plugs, about 8 ea. a snip at half the price! I am using this between the CD/DAC & PREAMP, and according to my local dealer expensive stuff will change what you hear, but is it really improving the sound? I will probably be changing my NAP250 for a pair of 135,s some time in the next couple of weeks or so, and my 250 will be up for sale. I you feel you want go for a 250 you can contact me on All-in-one. I am presently in our Galway plant, and should be back in Ayr on Friday. MILLERG @AYO or DTN 7823 3387 George |
