431.0. "Where to buy "Which" guides?" by YUPPY::AMERR () Fri Jun 25 1993 12:36

    Which bookshops/WH Smiths etc sell the "Which CD" etc guides. I am
    considering upgrading my Hi-Fi, and want to start checking out
    comparative pricing.

    Thanks,

Well WH Smiths is a good starting point - they stock the British ones I used to
buy and quite a few I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. It depends on what you
want: if it's only prices, they'll be fine. If you want magazines like
Stereophile or The Absolute Sound you'll have to try a hi-fi shop.

You're not really looking for one of the Which? series are you? Last I
noticed, they didn't know anything about hi-fi. Unless you already know what
publications you want, try asking here for good titles. I know there are
already notes on this subject, but things have changed since they were written.

431.2More pricing than opinion needed.YUPPY::AMERRFri Jun 25 1993 15:535
    I'm not so interested (actually not at all) in what the "Which" series
    think of various manufacturers kit merely a spec and a price; that
    would be my starting point on working out a (very) rough budget.

    re .2.....

    Both HiFi Choice and What HiFi? have the sorts of tables you are
    looking for. HiFi Choice would be my recommendation, as their entries
    and one-liner comments are based on very extensive and professional
    testing and auditioning reviews. What HiFi?'s reviews, on which their
    table is based, are more simplistic, in my view.

    In the end you are going to need a competent dealer who will
    demonstrate your choices *as a system* in relaxed environment. This will
    probably work best if you restrict your choice of each component to two or
    three types. More than that can be confusing, and it may be likely the
    dealer won't be able to demonstrate them all in a system context anyway.

    Lecture over. Have fun.

Is it just my imagination, or did HiFi Choice markedly deteriorate a few months

    re .4....

    Dunno. I don't read it regularly. I only read HiFi World, and only then
    because I was daft enough to buy a year's subs which I won't renew....

	yes, it did. the editor went away. they have just appointed a
	new one, and i think it has improved slightly over the last
	couple of months.

	meanwhile, my subscription has just expired and i'm going
	to leave it 6 months or so to find out how the new editor
	sorts it out.
