428.0. "Linn t/t losing torque / fix" by RDGENG::FRY (EuroISVg) Tue Jun 15 1993 16:27

My Linn motor had trouble spinning up the 45rpm attachment.
This apparently revealed a weakness, which was fixed by applying
a spot of sewing machine light oil on the motor bearing.
Strange that they didn't check this when they rebuilt it!

Anyone else had problems with motor speed/torque? I've just got
a Valhalla board model; not the outboard speed control box.

My LP12 went speed unstable a couple of years ago. At first it just happened
occasionally, and only very slightly, so that I wasn't sure it had really done
anything. It seemed as though some music "played out of tune".
I replaced the belt and oiled the bearing, and thought it was O.K. Then it
started to happen again, and finally the Valhalla board went up in smoke...
However, my dealer, Sound Advice of Loughborough, replaced the Valhalla board
free of charge, even though the deck was 4 years old.

re .1

Did you oil the motor bearing, or the main platter bearing?
Fortunately, my Valhalla seems to be doing fine after 7 years.

428.3It was the main platter bearingSWBNEU::BEMONT::KNOWLESThu Jun 24 1993 16:118
It was the main platter bearing that I oiled. Sound Advice didn't suggest oiling
the motor bearing.
After the Valhalla board was replaced everything was O.K., so I don't suppose
the motor bearing needed oiling, as I've had no trouble since (apart from
moving "house" to a major restoration project and not being able to afford a
Lingo and an Ekos, and now my Troika is worn out...)
