Gidday folks!
Just a word in case any of you are thinking about buying hifi in
Uk.....DO IT SOON..........!
I have done some price comparisons between Germany and UK(both in the
EEC) and find that dure to recent pound devaluation, the UK prics are
now better than Europe(formerly it was the other way around).
A coupe of examples: TEAC's new VDRS10 UK pounds770 Germany DM2600
TEAC's new P700 pounds700 DM2400
TEAC's old P500 pounds650 DM2200
These are japanese CD transports(excepting the VDRS10) but also
anything english eg: Roksan's CD transport is pounds1000, in Germany it
is DM3700.
So EEC shoppers, do some ringing around UK as the exchange rate (1
pound=DM2.5) favours getting sent over from UK without the duty
formerly paid.
I suspect that the importers in Uk are reluctant to up the prices to
account for the sterlings drop just yet as things are so depressed in
the UK luxury market. Anyone have any other feedback?

You know boys, a collegue of mine wants to buy a Harley Davidson(it's a
bit hard in the mid range!!;-)) and it is cheaper in the UK by a major
amount.........again.......only due to these things being imported when
the pound was stronger and this summer is THE time to buy one.
Unless the pound recovers(I don't think so) then next year will see
some big price hikes in UK for imported goods me thinks.

I can't see the justification really to panic buy...there's a recession
on (still), and the margins will reduce anyway.
Also as technology progresses, you get more for your money if you're
into gizmos...if not, then the esoteric stuff will always be expensive,
and some manufacturers will go to the wall.
I bought a Technics cassette deck 15 years ago for 156 pounds....and
the equivalent sound could be found in a product now for about 70
pounds, and that doesn't take into account the inflation rate over the
intervening years!
