Hi, I've been thinking of upgrading my speakers. I think I need something that sounds more detailed, and with a less boomy sound. Rather, than upgrade to something expensive like Linn Index II's (350 with stands!!), I have been toying with the idea of building a replacement cabinet for my Wharfedale Diamonds. I would plan to get the dimensions of my existing Diamonds exactly right, and try to build a cabinet from some nice looking wood. I could then optionally go for a better tweeter (I hear that the Diamond has a cheap tweeter). I hope that this will have advantages in Cabinet Rigidity, better detail (presumably, a lot provided by Tweeter) and a nicer looking speaker to boot. So, what are the pitfalls? I've no experience of carpentry, but probably can enlist help. What sort of corners should I do? What works best for a speaker? What sort of wood would work well? (and look nice!) Would it be worth bi-wiring? Are there any books worth reading on the subject? What upgrades could I consider to the units (Woofers, Tweeters or crossovers). Heck! I could even use my old amp, and make it active! Cheers. Mark Jeffery.

Mark, Wilmslow Audio are a goldmine for this sort of thing. They do catalogues, projects, etc. and will be able to answer your questions. There are other speaker DIY places that may be as good, see the latest HiFi World for details - there's a speaker project in the DIY supplement this month. I would be interested to hear how you get on, so long as I'm still around to read the note........ Troubled times, indeed. Dave |
