400.0. "Bose Acoustimass 3 Series II" by BAHTAT::HILTON (Beer...now there's a temporary solution) Sun Feb 21 1993 12:13

Has any seen/heard got any reviews of Bose Acoustimass-3 Series II
    speakers?

I was round at a friends house over the weekend and he had a pair, the
sound was amazing for the size.

The set consists of 3 speakers, a biggish bass unit you put anywhere in
the room, then 2 tiny speakers, smaller than a video cassette.

They cost around 350 he thought, but they look to be great for hiding
the speakers out of site in the lounge.

    Comments?

Although the ear Isn't directional below a certain frequency (300 Hz ?)
it can still tell if things are in phase or not. This can lead to some
very odd effects at the cutover frequecy.

Having said that - this is a general comment, I don't know about the
    Bose speakers in particular.

I've not heard these speakers though I've heard a number of
satelitte/sub-woofer systems. As previously stated the idea is that
low frequencies *PROBABLY* are not directional i.e. give the listener
no clues as to where the sound is coming from.

I've not yet heard a system of this sort deliver, in absolute sound
terms though a friend s second system, uses the wharefedale system and
sounds not bad. REL are the only company that seem to back up the
promise with performance, but these come in at 1000 for just the sub.

for a home cinema set up they are probably a very good idea, though
I've a suspicion that you could get better for the money. Dr Bose
always seems to me to be out at the 'fringe' of the HiFi world. he
believe that the construction techniques used for the cabinet do not
matter, the cabinet simply serves to seperate the 'air' at the front of
the driver from the 'air' at the back !!!! This flies well in the face
of most conventional thinking in speaker design, where ridgidity of
construction is thought to be essential, along with rigid support
    (spiked stands etc)

If aethetics are an issue have you considered these new UK build
speakers that are flat. At this moment I cant rember the name, but they
consist of two pannels 6" by 2.5' cost is circa 200. They alledgedly
can be used hung on a wall like a painting. Got generally good reviews
in the mags. Just an idea Greg
