A couple of items for EPOS ES11 and ES14 owners: ES14 (friend's speakers) - I've recently changed the bi-polar capacitor in the tweeter crossover for a polypropylene type. This resulted in a clearer treble that is beautifully integrated with the clear mid-range. Very explicit, clear mid and treble now. Played with removing the foam bung from the port and also tried cutting the bung so only one third of it was present. The bung gave very tuneful bass, but very little of it. No bung gave a bood spectral balance but the bass wasn't as tuneful, not bad but not up to the quality of the mid and treble. Simple trade-off of quality vs quanity though with the bung in female vocals were more expressive or open. ES11 - Mordaunt-Short are sending me a foam bung from their series 5 speakers. Some dealers have been using one bung cut in half to reduce and tighten the bass. I get loads of bass, so I thought I try this. Only ordered the bung today, I'll report back when I've tried this. Anyone one out there tried this already?

I tried a simiilar trick with my old Castle Kendals, but in the end I settled for movving them further from the back wall. Not a domestically acceptable solution, which was why they were replaced with Kans against the wall. I seem to remember someone doing something similar back in the 80's with Meridian speakers, tuning them to the room. The article was in of the Haymarket Linn/Naim fanzines of the day. This person filled the port with drinking straws, which effectively reduced its cross-sectional area. Using foam slowed the bass down, but without it the bass was overblown. The straws reduced the level but not the speed. Dave
398.2 | Matched pairs - unmatched components? | HLDE01::KOOI_J | Mon Nov 21 1994 10:06 | 7
Even though this note was posted ages ago: re 0.: since the ES14 (as well as the ES11, I would guess) are shipped as matched pairs with the same serial number, aren't you losing this aspect by buying two capacitors with ??% tolerance? Jelle Kooi |
