395.1 | Some impressions.... | BAHTAT::SALLITT | Dave @LZO 845-2374 | Thu Jan 28 1993 13:21 | 21 |
| I don't know the Chesters, but owned a pair of Kendals for a while so
can give some general comments.
I found the timbre/tone very pleasing and easy on the ear, which was
why I bought them. I eventually became dissatisfied with their timing
and ability to resolve detail. I swapped them for Linn Kans, which
boogied better but didn't sound quite so "nice" or look anywhere near
as good. This was a criticism made frequently about Castle speakers at
the time, and they may well have fixed it by now - from what you say it
seems they have.
During my dabblings with the speakers the cone suspension of both bass
drivers became damaged. Castle sent me a replacement pair at exchange
price very quickly, trusting me to return the old units. I found them
very responsive to requests for help, and eager to discuss hifi and
their products with anybody. They're not just enthusiasts, but
craftsmen too; as pieces of furniture, my Kendals were immaculate,
having one of warmest teak finishes I've yet to see and built like
brick outhouses.

| A friend of mine has the Chesters, he's got CD and amp that are if
anything soft in the treble, the the Chesters sound harsh at the top
end. It's the first time Castle have used a metal dome and I don't
think they've got it right. Extended listening is uncomfortable.
Bass is not deep, but is beautiful and the imaging is good too.

395.3 | Sad it say it , But your right ! | NEWOA::SUTCLIFFEJ | | Tue Feb 09 1993 09:29 | 27 |
| Clive,
After having the Chester's at home for the past 4 days I've got to
agree with your comments. The Chesters are flawed.
They present a vivid and open soundstage, imaging is excellent,
the bass limited but none the less superb. Your right extended
listening can sound uncomfortable with rock/pop.
Its a real shame that the Chesters aren't the all round speaker I was
looking for. With Jazz and Female vocal tracks they are suberb. With
rock and pop far from it.
Its a sad trip back to Sevenoaks to wave goodbye......
Now to audition an alternative!
As I said in the base note I demoed the Mission 753 and Rogers LS6/a
before borrowing the Chester's. SOme alternatives I've been
considering are the KEF Q80 , Q90 and Tannoy 613's, or Linn Keildh<--? .
Anyone care comment on these choices or suggest any alternatives for
matching with a A400.
May Thanks,
Jonathan

I've never heard an A400, but reviewers often say that it is on the
bright side of neutral. Therefore, I would have thought that in order
to get something you can listen to comfortably, you need to look at
speakers that are at relatively neutral. Perhaps the KEFs would be good
from this point of view ?

| The Linn speakers must be the ones (Though they have just gone up in
price). My local dealer makes sure he doesn't play them to people who
are interested in Kabers - at twice the price. They really are very
good.

| Rik,
I've gone and done it!
Saturday I purchased the Keildh's and an intek.
Radically different than the A400 Castle combination to say the least !
So far I'm very impressed.
Major Improvements are:-
Timing and control of bass lines.
No more nasty conjestion.
Boy,these can rock!
