383.0. "Laserdisk player as a Transport for CD?" by UFHIS::JMASLEN (The wheels fallen off your day yet?!) Tue Nov 17 1992 15:56
Ok you sleepyheads......where are you all?(got the packet /out to lunch
/yawn....who needs hifi......)
now that I have your complete attention..........
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
have any of you tried using laserdisk players as a CD transport
partnered with an outboard DAC?
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
I too have looked in the USAUDIO notes conference but hear about the
slow drawer and the inbuilt DACs but no mention as to drives ability to
work as a transport for CDs.
It ssems to me that anything capable of spinning a bloody heavy LD
should beable to spin a CD with the greatest of ease and be a really
stable platform to retrieve data from. (BTW., THETA in the US also
think so!)
So far I have only seen optical connections as digital outputs(are
there any Laserplayers with coax?)
Roksan and others have proved how important a solid/isolated transport
is but at pretty high prices........a laser disk from Sony or Pioneer
can be had for 300 pounds or a bit more if NTSC LDS are used(450
pounds)........still half the price of a Roksan or Meridian transport.
Any takers to do some experimenting..........If you are in Munich,
Germany and have an outboard DAC/transport combo, then ring me and we
can try my Sony 650 MDP LD player as a transport.........
cheers fjeff
